Newport News police arrested a second man in connection with a deadly shooting in which police said the pair robbed a Hampton man as he was on the ground dying. Robert Freeman, of Hampton, was arrested Monday for his role in a July 5 robbery and shooting that killed 34-year-old Dominic Thompson, according to police.

Freeman, 32, is one of two men facing charges of first-degree murder, robbery, assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and conspiracy to commit a felony. The other person, 38-year-old Adrian Demetrice Williams, was arrested Friday.

Newport News police were dispatched July 5 around 6:45 a.m. to a shooting at a gas station in the in the 600 block of J. Clyde Morris Boulevard, in the Watkins neighborhood. At the scene, officers found Thompson on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he died. Surveillance footage recovered from the gas station showed “the entire incident,” according to a criminal complaint filed in Newport News District Court.

“The video showed one suspect shoot Mr. Thompson twice and the other suspect assist the shooter with robbing Mr. Thompson of his belongings while he lied on the ground dying,” the court document said.

The criminal complaint detailed an interview with police in which Williams stated Freeman said he was going to rob the victim and Williams agreed to assist by searching the victim’s pockets. Williams told police Freeman shot the victim multiple times and the pair took the victim’s money, marijuana and a silver handgun before fleeing the scene.

While the investigation is ongoing, police are not looking for additional suspects.
