Yankees blank Orioles

-

Aaron Judge hit his major league-leading 37th home run, fellow All-Star Nestor Cortes pitched six sharp innings and the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-0 Sunday at Camden Yards.

Jose Trevino, another Yankees All-Star, had the first four-hit game of his career. New York took two of three in the series.

Judge has seven home runs in his last nine games and leads the majors with 81 RBIs. He raised his batting average to .294.

“I saw a lot of the greats — Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera — they always hit above .300 and the power just came with it,” Judge said. “That’s always been a goal of mine to hit above .300 and we’ll keep working towards it.”

Cortes (8-3) allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked none while lowering his ERA from 2.63 to 2.48. The 27-year-old lefty began his MLB career with the Orioles in 2018. He has gone 2-0 with a 0.46 in four appearances (three starts) against Baltimore at Oriole Park in his career.

“I go out there every fifth day like I do against any other team, but for some reason, I have more success against the Orioles,” Cortes said. “It feels good to do that.”

Clarke Schmidt pitched three innings and earned his first career save.

New York scored three times in the third on a double by DJ LeMahieu and a two-run drive by Judge off Dean Kremer (3-2). Judge has nine homers in his last 12 games against Baltimore and 36 over his career — his most against

any opponent. Nationals 4, Diamondbacks 3:

Keibert Ruiz had three hits, including a go-ahead single in the eighth inning, and Washington avoided a three-game sweep in Arizona.

Pinch-hitter Lane Thomas led off the eighth with a double against All-Star left-hander Joe Mantiply of Virginia Tech, and Ruiz brought him home with a line-drive single for a 4-3 advantage. Arizona left 13 runners on base, and the Nationals won for just the third time in 20 games.

Late Saturday

Orioles 6, Yankees 3: Gerrit Cole failed to hold a three-run lead, reliever Albert Abreu’s wild pickoff throw led to Cedric Mullins’ go-ahead sacrifice fly, and Baltimore rallied to win.

Ramón Urías added a two-run homer in the eighth off Shane Greene. New York went 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position.

Aaron Judge tied a career-high with four hits, and Matt Carpenter hit his 14th home run in his first 89 at-bats as a Yankee.

Urías went 3 for 4 and has six multihit games since being reinstated from the injured list July 4.

“We just stick together,” Urías said. “We’ve been doing it all season. We fight through the whole game.”

Cionel Pérez (5-1) pitched a scoreless seventh and Jorge López got his 18th save in 22 chances, though New York’s first two batters reached in the ninth.

Diamondbacks 7, Nationals 2: Madison Bumgarner pitched eight effective innings, Carson Kelly hit a solo homer and Arizona won.

The left-handed Bumgarner continued his best season since coming to Arizona on an $85 million, five-year deal in 2020, giving up just two runs on four hits. He threw 98 pitches, including 68 strikes, and walked none while striking out nine.

Rookie Alek Thomas added three hits, including a two-run double. Former Virginia Cavalier Jake McCarthy and Christian Walker both had two hits. The Nationals lost for the 17th time in 19 games.

Washington’s Victor Robles connected for a solo homer. Juan Soto was hitless in four at-bats — striking out three times for the first time this season — and had his on-base streak snapped at 28 games.
