Ex-King’s Fork star sparks upset

Epps steps up late to help No. 17 Illinois knock off No. 2 Texas

Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 12 of his 16 points in overtime, including the tiebreakin­g 3-pointer with 3:34 remaining, and No. 17 Illinois rallied to hand No. 2 Texas its first loss of the season, 85-78 on Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic in New York.

Former King’s Fork High standout Jayden Epps added 11 points for the Illini, including the final five points of regulation — a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left and two tying free throws with 8 seconds remaining. Epps then blocked Marcus Carr’s jumper in the lane just before the buzzer to force overtime in an entertaini­ng showdown at Madison Square Garden.

Matthew Mayer, who faced Texas several times at Baylor, tied a career high with 21 points as he made his first seven shots and finished 8 of 10 for Illinois (7-2).

Timmy Allen scored a seasonhigh 21 points for Texas (6-1).

No. 1 Houston 76, North Florida 42: Ja’Vier Francis scored 14 points, star Marcus Sasser had 12 points in the first eight minutes before leaving with a cut over his eye and host Houston (9-0) coasted to a win over North Florida (2-6).

Jarace Walker had 12 points with 10 rebounds for Houston, and Tramon Mark scored 10.

No. 9 Arkansas 65, North Carolina-Greensboro 58: Nick Smith Jr. scored 22 points to help Arkansas (8-1) overcome a sluggish offensive showing and outlast North Carolina-Greensboro (4-6) at home.

The Razorbacks shot 33.3% and trailed for a majority of the game.

No. 12 Baylor 80, Tarleton State 57: Freshman Keyonte George scored 22 points, redshirt freshman Langston Love added 20 and Baylor (7-2) beat Tarleton State (5-4) in Waco, Texas.

The Bears were playing for the first time since a school-record run of 54 consecutiv­e weeks in the top 10 ended.

Wisconsin 64, No. 13 Maryland 59: Chucky Hepburn scored 13 points and Steven Crowl added 12 as host Wisconsin (7-2, 1-0 Big

Ten) handed Maryland (8-1, 1-1) its first loss under coach Kevin Willard.

Jahmir Young scored 17 points and Julian Reese had 10 for the Terrapins.

No. 24 TCU 78, Jackson State 51: JaKobe Coles scored a careerhigh 21 points, Damion Baugh had 15 points, six rebounds and five assists and TCU (7-1) beat Jackson State (1-7) at home for its fifth straight victory.

No. 15 Duke 74, Iowa 62: Jeremy Roach tied a career high with 22 points and Duke (9-2) led virtually the entire way in a victory over Iowa (6-2) in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

North Carolina State 94, Coppin State 72: Terquavion Smith scored 33 points, Jarkel Joiner added 29 and host North Carolina State (8-2) beat Coppin State (4-7) in a game in which the Wolfpack led from the start.

Syracuse 95, Oakland 66: Joe Girard had 18 points and six assists, Jesse Edwards added 18 points with seven rebounds and Syracuse (5-4) closed the first half on an 18-0 run en route to a home win over Oakland (3-8).

Georgia Tech 79, Georgia 77: Miles Kelly hit a huge 3-pointer and then a drove for the game-winner as Georgia Tech (6-3) rallied to beat Georgia (7-3) in Atlanta.

New Hampshire 74, Boston College 71 (OT): Clarence O. Daniels II scored a career-high 34 points, Nazim Derry hit a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left in overtime and visiting New Hampshire (3-5) beat Boston College (5-5) for its first road win in the series.

George Mason 67, Maryland-Eastern Shore 54: Josh Oduro’s 23 points and 12 rebounds helped George Mason (6-4) defeat Maryland-Eastern Shore (3-6) in Fairfax.

UNC Wilmington 74, East Carolina 61: Trazarien White had 18 points and 14 rebounds as UNC Wilmington (7-3) won at home over East Carolina (6-4).

Service academy Air Force 79, South Dakota 58:

Jake Heidbreder had 27 points as Air Force (6-4) defeated South Dakota (5-5) at home.
