Gloucester tops Woodside to win district tournament

Both Peninsula public school districts completed their district wrestling championsh­ips last weekend.

In the Peninsula District, Gloucester pulled away from a scrappy Woodside team to earn the championsh­ip at Phoebus High.

The Dukes scored 178 points, 18 more than the Wolverines.

Gloucester earned five individual titles, all in the lower weights: Aiden Sheesley (106), Micah Bodiford (120), Ty Baker (126), Corey Skay (132) and Karl Dean (144) all won by pin.

Woodside won three weight classes. Carmine McDaniel captured the title at 138, Jewels Lewis won at 175 and Mustapha Coly placed first at 215.

Other individual winners included Phoebus’ Tomari Johnson (113), Heritage’s Zac Ray (150) and Semaj Hanesworth (157), Bethel’s Kaden Vandal (165) and James Goodman (190) and Phoebus’ Michael McMullin (285).

New Kent and Poquoson battled through the weight brackets,

In the Bay Rivers District,

placing winners in 12 of the 14 classes. In the end, the Trojans convincing­ly won the team title 283.5-218.

In the finals, Poquoson drew first blood as Kam Harrell (106), Jared Goodson (113) and James Withrow (120) won the first three bouts. New Kent countered strongly in the next five title rounds with Kyle Gibson (126), Trace Ragland (132), Matthew Eberly (138), Patrick Jordon (144) and Jason Bennett (150) all winning their bouts, the final four by fall.

Poquoson’s Blake Latta won at 157, followed by New Kent’s Aidan Richardson at 165 Lafayette’s Dillon Fitzpatric­k broke up the two-team individual sweep with his forfeit victory at 175.

Samuel Villasenor of Poquoson earned first at 190, while New Kent’s Seth Bayens won at 215. In the day’s final matchup, Tabb’s Diego Marin kept his undefeated season (29-0) going, winning at 285 by fall.

Wildcats second at Ocean Lakes Invitation­al:

Great Bridge placed three wrestlers at the top of their weight bracket, leading to a second-place finish at last weekend’s Ocean Lakes Invitation­al. The Wildcats scored 234.5 points.

Longtime Baltimore area powerhouse Mt. St. Joseph’s won with 353.5.

Great Bridge’s Myrin Nixon (132), Caleb Neal (138) and Eric Doran (150) each won their weight class. The other local winner was Nolan O’Boyle of Norfolk Academy, who scored a 7-5 decision over Nicholas Barnabae of Mt. St. Joseph’s to win at 165.

Grassfield (third, 164 points), Kellam (fourth, 150), Landstown (fifth, 149) and Oscar Smith (sixth, 141.5) also fared well among the 23 teams.

Goodwin, Shuler, Daugherty top girls state rankings:

Kellam’s Mia Goodwin, Grassfield’s Charlize Shuler and Menchville’s Kassey Daugherty are currently ranked first in the state, according to the latest Virginia High School girls rankings, compiled by the Virginia Wrestling Associatio­n.

Goodwin ranks first at 106, Shuler is atop the 112-pound division and Daugherty is first at 127, where she is joined in the top five by Deep Creek’s Olivia Adams (No. 3) and sister Charlie Daugherty (No. 4).

Woodside’s Jordyn Anderson is second behind Shuler at 122, and Hayden Mayo of Western Branch is ranked fifth at 118.
