Gators show teeth against Vols

Colin Castleton had 20 points and nine rebounds, Kyle Lofton added 14 points and Florida used a 13-0 run late in the second half to upend No. 2 Tennessee 67-54 on Wednesday night in Gainesvill­e.

The Volunteers, playing with their highest ranking in four years, lost for the first time in five games. They had won nine of 10.

Tennessee (18-4, 7-2 SEC) took a six-point lead in the second half, but the Gators (13-9, 6-3) stormed back behind Castleton, who scored 11 of 14 points as Florida rallied.

Mason Gillis broke the Mackey Arena record by making nine 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 29 points, leading Purdue (22-1, 11-1 Big Ten) to a rout over Penn State (14-8, 5-6) in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Zach Edey added his 18th double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Big Ten-leading Boilermake­rs, who have won nine straight.

No. 14 Marquette 73, Villanova 64: Tyler Kolek scored 20 points and Marquette (18-5, 10-2 Big East) rallied to beat Villanova (10-12, 4-7) in Milwaukee.

No. 16 Xavier 85, No. 17 Providence 83 (OT): Jack Nunge had 23 points and 14 rebounds as Xavier (18-5, 10-2 Big East) held off Providence (17-6, 9-3) in an overtime thriller in Cincinnati.

No. 25 Auburn 94, Georgia 73: Johni Broome scored 19 points and matched a career high with 18 rebounds as Auburn (17-5, 7-2 SEC) defeated Georgia (14-8, 4-5).

ACC Pittsburgh 65, North Carolina 64:

Jamarius Burton made the game-winning free throws with three seconds left, Nike Sibande recorded a late block and Pittsburgh (16-7, 9-3) continued its recent bedevilmen­t of North Carolina (15-7, 7-4), beating the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill.

The Panthers have won three straight against North Carolina and five of the past six meetings.

North Carolina State 94, Florida State 66:

Terquavion Smith scored 32 as the host Wolfpack (18-5, 8-5) ripped FSU (7-16, 5-7).

Louisville 68, Georgia Tech 58: Jae’ly Withers had 19 points and 13 rebounds as host Louisville (3-19, 1-10) defeated Georgia Tech (8-14, 1-11) for its first ACC win.

Region/state No. 4 Christophe­r Newport 67, Mary Washington 53:

Brandon Edmond scored a career-high 19 points and CNU rallied from a 22-9 deficit in Fredericks­burg.

Trey Barber added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Captains (19-3), who have won four straight since a five-point loss at No. 2 Randolph-Macon. Ty Henderson contribute­d 12 points.

Da’Shawn Cook, from Williamsbu­rg, paced UMW (15-6) with 16 points.

Hampden-Sydney 73, Virginia Wesleyan 66:

Adam Brazil scored 17 points and Davidson Hubbard added 13 points and nine rebounds as No. 18 Hampden-Sydney (17-4, 11-1 ODAC) handed Virginia Wesleyan (13-7, 5-7) its third straight defeat.

Omari DeVeaux paced the Marlins with 20 points and five rebounds, while Jordan Crump added 18 points and six rebounds.

Apprentice 61, Virginia Peninsula Community College 55:

The Builders (13-6, 8-0) stayed unbeaten in the New South Athletic Conference by edging the Gators (8-6, 1-3) in Newport News. Shawn Eley scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds for Apprentice. For VPCC, Jhalen Harris scored 15 points, and Javion Majette had 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

St. Bonaventur­e 66, Richmond 62: Yann Farell had 18 points as St. Bonaventur­e (12-11, 6-4 Atlantic 10) won at UR (11-12, 4-6).

George Mason 70, UMass 59: Justyn Fernandez had 18 points and George Mason (13-10, 5-5 Atlantic 10) beat UMass (13-9, 4-6) in Fairfax.

Radford 67, Presbyteri­an 59: DaQuan Smith’s 21 points helped Radford (15-9, 9-2 Big South) defeat Presbyteri­an (5-19, 1-10) in Clinton, South Carolina.

Winthrop 76, Longwood 74:

Sin’Cere McMahon scored 20 points to help Winthrop (11-13, 6-5 Big South) defeat visiting Longwood (15-9, 7-4).

South Florida 71, East Carolina 63:

Tyler Harris scored 21 points as South Florida (10-13, 3-7 American Athletic) beat East Carolina (11-12, 2-8) in Tampa.

Deaver had 16 points as Navy (12-11, 5-6 Patriot) beat host Lafayette (7-17, 5-6).

Army 71, Lehigh 69: Jalen Rucker had 23 points and Army (13-11, 7-4 Patriot) beat host Lehigh (13-9, 8-3).

Women No. 11 North Carolina 73, Virginia 62 (Thursday):

Kayla McPherson had 14 points to lead five Tar Heels in double figures in their home win. London Clarkson led UVA with 23 points.

UNC (17-5, 8-3 ACC) won its eighth consecutiv­e game. The Tar Heels began the second quarter on an 11-3 binge for a 20-11 lead and were ahead after that. The Cavaliers (14-9, 3-9) have dropped five consecutiv­e games.

No. 4 Indiana 77, Minnesota 54:

Mackenzie Holmes scored 28 points with four blocks and Sydney Parrish added 23 points, eight rebounds and five steals to help Indiana (21-1, 11-1 Big Ten) beat host Minnesota (9-13, 2-9).

No. 5 UConn 64, Providence 54: Dorka Juhasz had 19 points and 17 rebounds as visiting UConn (21-2, 13-0 Big East) held off Providence (13-11, 4-9).

No. 10 Ohio State 90, Wisconsin 67: Taylor Thierry scored a career-high 25 to help visiting Ohio State (20-3, 9-3 Big Ten) beat Wisconsin (7-16, 2-9), snapping the Buckeyes’ three-game losing skid.

Bryant & Stratton 89, Richard Bland 86, OT:

Ashanti Broughton had 21 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists as the Bobcats (16-2, 11-0) rallied past the Statesmen (17-1, 10-1) in Prince George County in a showdown for first place in NJCAA Region 10.

Apprentice 66, Carolina Christian 42:

Jada Bryant scored 15 points and Amaya Ray and Kerrigan Small each had 10 apiece for the host Builders (11-6, 1-2 New South Athletic Conference) against the Centurions (6-4, 1-1).
