Cox wins Class 5 Region A title

Tournament host Cox won the Class 5 Region A wrestling championsh­ip in relatively comfortabl­e fashion Saturday in Virginia Beach.

The Falcons scored 294 points, led by three champions at their weight classes: Carter Shupert (144), Tyler Haley (165) and Aiden Manning (190).

Princess Anne edged First Colonial 188-187 for second place. The Cavaliers’ only bracket champion was Lucas VanNostran­d (120). The Patriots didn’t have the depth above the teams above them, but six FC wrestlers took top honors: Cole Murphy (132), Gavin Mosley (150), Thomas Stofka (157), Tyler Klinger (175), Schey Huff (215) and Colin Pedersen (285).

Tallwood was fourth with 179 points, led by 106-pound champion Josiah Irizarry.

Also earning titles were Salem’s

Hunter Elliott (113), Hickory’s James Hersey (126) and Tallwood’s Trey Thebarge (138),

The top four wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes qualified for the state tournament Feb. 17-18 at Virginia Beach Sports Center. Thirteen Cox wrestlers advanced.

Swimming

First Colonial girls, Ocean Lakes boys take Beach crowns: After two years of the Beach District championsh­ips being canceled, the First Colonial girls and Ocean Lakes boys took the team championsh­ips Saturday at the Princess Anne Rec Center.

First Colonial’s Kayleigh Duffy, who has committed to swim for Virginia, won the 50- and 100-meter freestyles. Her sister, freshman Dara Duffy, won the 200 and 400 freestyles, and the Patriots’ Addy Roberts won the 200 individual medley and was third in the 400 free.

Among the other highlights for the FC girls: Ellie Berenguer was the runner-up in the 100 and 200 freestyles; Charlotte Everhart was second in the 200 IM; Sara Teague was second in the 400 free and third in the 50 free; Maris Marchione was the 100 butterfly runner-up; Maggie Wright was second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 100 fly; and Lana Macchi was the 100 breaststro­ke runner-up.

In boys competitio­n, Ocean Lakes’ Bobby DiNunzio won all four of his events, taking top honors in the 200 individual medley and the 400 freestyle and leading the Dolphins’ 200 medley and 400 free relays. Princess Anne’s Radomyr Couture won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

FC junior Nate Keenan won the 200 free.

The Class 5 Region A meet is scheduled for the Princess Anne Rec Center at 3 p.m. Friday.
