WNBA investigating allegations vs. Aces
The WNBA is investigating Dearica Hamby’s allegations that the Aces bullied and manipulated her for being pregnant, the league Wednesday.
It was the first time the league acknowledged it was looking into the situation. The players’ union had pushed for an inquiry into whether Hamby’s rights under the league’s 2020 labor agreement were violated, as well as state and federal laws.
Hamby made her allegations after the defending league champions traded her to the Sparks on Jan. 21.
Seven days later the Aces signed two-time league MVP Candace Parker.
Hamby agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Aces in June.
After she was traded, Hamby posted on Instagram: “Being traded is a part of the business. Being lied to, bullied, manipulated, and discriminated against is not.”
College football: Florida State signed coach Mike Norvell to a contract extension through the 2029 season. Norvell, 41, will earn an average of $8.05 million per year with the new agreement.
NBA: The Pelicans confirmed that F Zion Williamson will remain out through the All-Star break and will not participate in the All-Star Game on Feb. 19. Williamson hurt his hamstring on Jan. 2 and hasn’t played since.
NFL: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes said his ailing right ankle is “definitely in a better spot” and he doesn’t expect to be limited by it during the Super Bowl . ... Hall of Fame WR Michael Irvin will not fill his role as an NFL Network analyst ahead of the Super Bowl after a woman issued a complaint about his conduct during a hotel encounter in Glendale, Arizona. Irvin denied any wrongdoing to The Dallas Morning News.
Christian Atsu remains missing after two devastating earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, Hatayspor manager Volkan Demirel told Reuters. The Turkish club’s vice president and the Ghana Football Association had said Tuesday that Atsu, 31, a former Chelsea and Newcastle United player, had been rescued from the rubble and transported to hospital. The search for Atsu is ongoing, Demirel added.
