Hampton women stop A&T

Young, Pirates knock Aggies from tie for 1st

Nylah Young had 18 points, four rebounds and five steals as the Hampton University women achieved perhaps the most notable victory of their first Colonial Athletic Associatio­n season, overcoming North Carolina A&T 66-53 Thursday night in Greensboro.

The Aggies (15-8, 9-3) fell out of a tie for first place in the CAA with perennial power Drexel.

Hampton (8-13, 5-6) also got 15 points from Camryn Hill and 10 from Jermany Mapp. Young sank all six of her free throws and Hill hit all five of hers.

Hampton made 19 of 21 free throws compared to 14 of 28 by the Aggies, their former rival in the MEAC and Big South.

Maleia Bracone and Chaniya Clark each had 12 points for A&T, which committed 31 turnovers to Hampton’s 21.

HU scored the last eight points of the first half to go ahead 28-23. The Pirates led 54-50 before outscoring the Aggies 12-3 in the final 3 ½ minutes.

MORE WOMEN Old Dominion 67, Georgia Southern 50:

The Monarchs (17-9, 9-4 Sun Belt) dominated the third quarter 23-14 to pull away at Chartway Arena in Norfolk, running their winning streak to four. Makayla Dickens scored 14 points, while Jordan McLaughlin and Jatyjia Jones added 11 each for ODU. Jones had five assists.

The Eagles (15-7, 7-6), led by Taya Gibson’s 14 points, had won two in a row.

No. 10 Notre Dame 69, Pittsburgh 63:

Sonia Citron scored 20 points and Maddy Westbeld had 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks as the host Irish (19-4, 10-3 ACC) held off the Panthers (8-16, 1-12). Dayshanett­e Harris scored 20 for Pitt.

Late Wednesday WOMEN Marquette 59, No. 4 UConn 52:

UConn lost back-to-back games for the first time in three decades as the Huskies fell to Marquette in Milwaukee.

The Huskies, who were playing three nights after an 81-77 home loss to No. 1 South Carolina, lost consecutiv­e games for the first time since March 1993.

Chloe Marotta had 19 points and Jordan King added 18 for Marquette (16-8, 9-6 Big East), which beat UConn (21-4, 13-1) for the first time in 17 meetings.

Shenandoah 79, Virginia Wesleyan 67: Terese Greene and Shawnise Campbell scored 20 points each to lead Shenandoah (14-8, 9-6) to an ODAC victory in Virginia Beach.

Sarah Ellis paced the Marlins (6-16, 2-13) with 18 points, while Adaje Williams added 16 and Meadow Dyke had 12.

STATE MEN Towson 86, Hampton 72:

Nicolas Timberlake collected 31 points as the Tigers won in Maryland.

Timberlake added five rebounds for the Tigers (17-8, 9-3 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n), while Cameron Holden scored 22 points and added 12 rebounds. Charles Thompson had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Marquis Godwin led the Pirates (6-19, 3-9) with 17 points. Hampton also got 16 points and seven assists from Russell “Deuce” Dean. In addition, Daniel Banister finished with 12 points and three blocks.

Hampton will host the College of Charleston on Saturday.

TOP25 Vanderbilt 66, No. 6 Tennessee 65:

Tyrin Lawrence knocked down a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer as Vanderbilt snapped an 11-game skid against its in-state rival with an upset in Nashville.

Students rushed the court and joined the Commodores in celebratin­g easily the biggest win in coach Jerry Stackhouse’s fourth season. Then the Commodores (12-12, 5-6 SEC) celebrated by running along the courtside slapping high-fives.

Tennessee (19-5, 8-2) had a chance to finish the win after Olivier Nkamhoua knocked down a 15-foot jumper with 50 seconds left for a 65-63 lead. But Santiago Vescovi went to the line with 8 seconds left. He missed the first shot, and Lawrence grabbed the rebound. Stackhouse took a timeout with 4 seconds to go to set up the final play, and Ezra Manjon found Lawrence in the corner for the winning bucket.

No. 2 Houston 80, Tulsa 42: Marcus Sasser scored 25 points and had five 3-pointers, Emanuel Sharp added 13 points and Houston (23-2, 11-1 American) rolled at home for its fifth straight win.

Tim Dalger scored 13 points for Tulsa (5-18, 1-11).

No. 3 Alabama 97, Florida 69:

Brandon Miller scored 24 points and made 4 of 8 3-pointers to lead Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

The Crimson Tide (21-3, 11-0 SEC) raced to a 29-point halftime lead against the Gators (13-11, 6-5), who had knocked off then-No. 2 Tennessee a week earlier.

Alabama matched the 1975-76 team for the program’s best record through 24 games.

West Virginia 76, No. 11 Iowa State 71: Kedrian Johnson tied a career high with 22 points, and host WVU held off Iowa State.

Emmitt Mathews added a season-high 20 points for the Mountainee­rs (15-9, 4-7 Big 12), who have won five of seven to get their season moving in the right direction after they dropped five in a row during one stretch.

The Cyclones (16-7, 7-4) missed a chance to move into a first-place tie with No. 5 Texas.

No. 14 Baylor 82, Oklahoma 72: Keyonte George had 23 points, Adam Flagler scored 20 and big man Johnathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua made a couple of key 3-pointers as host Baylor (18-6, 7-4 Big 12) held on to beat Oklahoma (12-12, 2-9).

Flagler scored 14 points in the final 13:11 of the game, the first of those being a jumper that put Baylor back ahead to stay.

Langston Love added 19 points for Baylor, which has won eight of nine overall since losing its first three league games.

The Sooners lost their sixth consecutiv­e Big 12 game.

No. 20 Providence 74, Georgetown 62:

Bryce Hopkins scored 17 points as Providence won at home.

Devin Carter and Ed Croswell had 12 points apiece as the Friars (18-6, 10-3 Big East) won for the fourth time in five games. Noah Locke added 11 points, shooting 3 of 5 from 3-point range.

Bradley Ezewiro paced lastplace Georgetown (6-19, 1-13) with 19 points.

No. 23 Creighton 75, Seton Hall 62: Baylor Scheierman had 19 points and nine rebounds, Ryan Nembhard added 15 on 6-of-7 shooting and dished out four assists and Creighton (16-8, 10-3 Big East) fended off feisty Seton Hall (15-10, 8-6) in Newark, New Jersey.

ACC Syracuse 76, Florida State 67:

Joe Girard III scored 26 points, Jesse Edwards had his 10th double-double of the season and Judah Mintz scored 14 of his 16 in the final 13 minutes as Syracuse (15-10, 8-6) beat Florida State (8-17, 6-8) in Tallahasse­e.

Matthew Cleveland had 19 points and 12 rebounds for FSU.

Georgia Tech 70, Notre Dame 68: Lance Terry scored 19 points, the last two on a tip-in at the buzzer that gave Georgia Tech (9-15, 2-12) a victory over Notre Dame (10-14, 2-11) in Atlanta.

Javon Franklin had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Irish.

STATE George Washington 107, Richmond 105 (2OT):

Brendan Adams scored 35 points, including six in double overtime, as GW (12-12, 6-5 Atlantic 10) knocked off Richmond (12-13, 5-7) in Washington.

James Bishop scored 33 points and added 10 assists for GW. Matt Grace led the Spiders with 28 points, while Isaiah Bigelow added 18 points and nine rebounds.

Duquesne 75, George Mason 52: Dae Dae Grant’s 20 points helped Duquesne (16-8, 6-5 Atlantic 10) defeat George Mason (13-12, 5-7) in Pittsburgh.

Josh Oduro led the Patriots with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Furman 94, VMI 63: Alex Williams had 18 points and visiting Furman (20-6, 11-2 Southern Conference) beat VMI (6-20, 1-12).

Taeshaud Jackson led the Keydets with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Longwood 66, Presbyteri­an 46: Isaiah Wilkins had 15 points as Longwood (17-9, 9-4 Big South) rolled past Presbyteri­an (5-21, 1-12) in Farmville.

SERVICE ACADEMIES Navy 71, Bucknell 65:

Daniel Deaver scored 20 points and Navy (14-11, 7-6 Patriot) defeated Bucknell (10-16, 3-10) in Annapolis, Maryland.

Army 76, Loyola Maryland 70:

Chris Mann scored 18 points as Army (14-12, 8-5 Patriot) beat the Greyhounds (8-18, 3-10) in West Point, New York.
