Zelenskyy: ‘No place’ for Russia at Olympics

Russian athletes have “no place” at next year’s Paris Olympics while their country’s invasion of Ukraine continues, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told a summit of sports officials from 36 countries Friday.

The International Olympic Committee argues it would be discriminatory to exclude Russia and ally Belarus from sports ahead of the 2024 Paris Games. With qualifying in many sports already underway, the IOC wants athletes from those countries to compete in a neutral capacity without national symbols.

“While Russia kills and terrorizes, representatives of the terrorist state have no place at sports and Olympic competitions,” Zelenskyy told the summit in an opening address by video link, according to a transcript issued by his office.

NBA: Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said Friday he doesn’t anticipate All-Star Jaylen Brown missing a significant amount of time after suffering a broken bone in his face.

NFL: Patrick Mahomes dominated the voting for the AP NFL Most Valuable Player. Mahomes, who also won in 2018, easily outdistanced Jalen Hurts, receiving 48 of 50 first-place votes. Brian Daboll won Coach of the Year. Nick Bosa made it a landslide for the Defensive Player of the Year award. Jets cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner won the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Jets receiver Garrett Wilson was named Offensive Rookie of the year, and Justin Jefferson ran away with the Offensive Player of the Year award . ... Six-time All-Pro OL Joe Thomas and lockdown CB Darrelle Revis got voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on their first try. Thomas and Revis join a new Hall class that also includes DeMarcus Ware, Zach Thomas, Ronde Barber, as well as senior candidates Joe Klecko, Chuck Howley, Ken Riley and coaching candidate Don Coryell.
