ODU women win sixth in row, avenge loss to App St.

It wasn’t easy, but the Old Dominion women avenged one of their most frustratin­g losses of the season, defeating Appalachia­n State 71-65 Thursday at Chartway Arena in Norfolk.

On their Senior Night, Brianna Jackson had 19 points and nine rebounds and Amari Young had 14 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Monarchs (19-9, 11-4). They won their sixth game in a row, ensuring they would retain a share of second place in the Sun Belt. ASU fell to 9-17, 5-10.

It was a vast change from the Mountainee­rs’ 81-55 victory in Boone, North Carolina, on Dec. 29. Young put ODU ahead for good, scoring inside for a 61-59 lead with 2:55 to go.

Late Wednesday TOP25 No. 10 Tennessee 68, No. 1 Alabama 59:

Zakai Zeigler and Santiago Vescovi each scored 15 points as Tennessee took down newly minted No. 1 Alabama in Knoxville.

Playing its first game as the top-ranked team since the 200203 season, the Crimson Tide (22-4, 12-1 SEC) committed 19 turnovers. No. 11 Marquette 69, No. 16 Xavier 68: Olivier-Maxence Prosper tipped in a putback with 1.6 seconds left and Marquette edged Xavier in Milwaukee to extend its slim Big East lead.

Northweste­rn 64, No. 14 Indiana 62: Boo Buie scored the tiebreakin­g basket with two seconds remaining as host Northweste­rn (19-7, 10-5 Big Ten) followed its first win over a top-ranked team by beating Indiana (18-8, 9-6) in Evanston, Illinois.

No. 19 Iowa State 70, No. 22 TCU 59: Aljaz Kunc had career highs of 22 points and five 3-pointers in his first start in nearly two months, and Iowa State (17-8, 8-5 Big 12) never trailed in a home win over TCU (17-9, 6-7).

No. 21 San Diego State 45, Fresno State 43: Matt Bradley scored 10 points and San Diego State (21-5, 12-2 Mountain West) slipped past Fresno State (9-16, 5-9) on the road.

Matthew Brodie and Jahn Hines scored 20 points each to help the Captains, ranked No. 3 in Division III, hold off the Eagles in a battle of the top teams in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference. Ty Henderson contribute­d 12 points and seven rebounds for the Captains (22-3). VCU 55, Rhode Island 54: Zeb Jackson hit a jumper at the buzzer, Brandon Johns Jr. had 17 points and VCU (19-7, 10-3 Atlantic 10) beat host Rhode Island (8-17, 4-9). La Salle 68, Richmond 62: Hassan Drame scored 16 points as La Salle (13-13, 7-6 Atlantic 10) beat Richmond (13-14, 6-8) in Philadelph­ia. George Mason 66, George Washington 53: Josh Oduro’s 19 points, 12 points and three steals helped visiting George Mason (15-12, 7-7 Atlantic) defeat George Washington (12-14, 6-7).

South Carolina Upstate 72, Longwood 67: Jordan Gainey scored 17 points as USC Upstate (13-13, 8-7 Big South) beat Longwood (18-10, 10-5) in Spartanbur­g. Chattanoog­a 78, VMI 58: KC Hankton scored 13 points to help Chattanoog­a (15-13, 7-8 Southern) defeat VMI (6-22, 1-14) in Lexington.

East Carolina 75, Cincinnati 71: Brandon Johnson scored 16 points to lead East Carolina (13-12, 4-8 American Athletic) past Cincinnati (17-10, 8-6) in Greenville, North Carolina.

Apprentice 72, Mid-Atlantic Christian 56:

The Builders (17-7, 11-0) finished their New South Athletic Conference regular season unbeaten by leading wire-to-wire against the Mustangs (12-9, 6-2) in Newport News.

ACC Clemson 94, Florida State 54:

PJ Hall scored 20 points, Chase Hunter added 18 and Clemson (19-7, 11-4) jumped out early and cruised to a home victory over Florida State (8-19, 6-10) to end a three-game skid.

SERVICE ACADEMIES Navy 75, Lehigh 64:

Daniel Deaver’s 17 points and 13 rebounds helped Navy (16-11, 9-6 Patriot League) defeat Lehigh (14-12, 9-6) in Bethlehem, Pennsylvan­ia.

Colgate 93, Army 86: Oliver Lynch-Daniels scored 23 points to help Colgate (20-8, 14-1 Patriot) defeat Army (14-14, 8-7) in Hamilton, New York.

TOP 1 0 WOMEN No. 6 Connecticu­t 62, Creighton 60:

Caroline Ducharme scored all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter, including the winning free throws with just under 5 seconds left, and the Huskies (23-4, 15-1 Big East) came from behind to beat Creighton (18-7, 12-5) in Storrs, Connecticu­t.

No. 7 Iowa 91, Wisconsin 61: Caitlin Clark scored 24 points and Monika Czinano had 19 as host Iowa (21-5, 13-2 Big Ten) defeated Wisconsin (8-19, 3-12).

STATE WOMEN Virginia Wesleyan 54, Averett 44:

Adaje Williams had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Jada Norman added 12 points to lead the Marlins (7-17, 3-14 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) past the Cougars (4-20, 2-15) on VWU’s Senior Day.
