Ticer’s three homers lead ODU
Jake Ticer clubbed three home runs as Old Dominion defeated St. John’s 10-5 in Norfolk to finish with two wins in a season-opening threegame series. Ticer walked, was hit by a pitch and scored four runs, and Thomas Wheeler also homered.
Christopher Newport (5-0) finished a three-game home sweep of New Paltz, drawing eight walks in an 8-4 win. Alec Reilly’s two-run single in the first set the tone.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-3) split a pair of Sunday games at the Diamond Invitational. The Marlins overcame Messiah of Pennsylvania 12-9 but then lost 3-2 to tournament host Methodist. Against Messiah, Samuel Kasprow drove in three runs, Edgar Harwood scored three and Jaelen Hines had three hits.
Morehead State swept a doubleheader at Norfolk State for the second day in a row, winning 18-6 and 3-0. In Game 1, Raphael Rodriguez homered for the Spartans (0-4) and Jacob Council scored twice.
Mercer edged William & Mary 5-4 in 10 innings, with the Tribe leaving Macon, Georgia, at 1-2. R Brown’s single drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th after the Bears drew three walks. Tribe reliever Rojo Prarie struck out six in three scoreless innings.
Saturday, Apprentice School (3-1) split a doubleheader with Penn State Mont Alto, winning 3-1 before losing 10-4.
Nick Redman struck out 11 in Game 1, yielding one hit in five innings for the victory. Matt Phoebus hit an RBI double.
In Game 2, the visitors scored six runs in the fourth to go ahead 8-4. Apprentice’s Caleb Russell hit a two-run double.
