King’s Fork extends 757 reign, secures state tourney trip

Class 4 Region A Tournament King’s Fork 76, Great Bridge 45:

Sam Brannen led five double-figure scorers with 17 points, and the top-seeded Bulldogs raced to a 24-point halftime lead in a semifinal victory in Suffolk that clinched a state tournament berth.

King’s Fork (20-3) remained unbeaten against Hampton Roads opponents, racing to a 49-25 lead at halftime. Brannen finished with seven assists and Kaleb Brown (11 points, six rebounds, four assists), Adarius Boston (13 points, six rebounds), Zekhi Darden (10 points) and Elijah Walker (10 points) also scored in double figures.

The Bulldogs will host Heritage in tonight’s region championsh­ip game.

Heritage 62, Hampton 51: The Hurricanes earned a state tournament berth under first-year coach Dimitri Batten, a former player for Kecoughtan, Heritage, Boston College and Old Dominion.

Heritage’s Donovan Raikes scored 20 points and Ramone Green had 17 as their team joined King’s Fork in the state tournament. Daron Baugh led Hampton with 19 points and Jaylen Wynn had 14.

Class 3 Region A Tournament Lake Taylor 71, Booker T. Washington 50:

Elijah Washington, Aaron Elliott and Rodney Baines finished with double-doubles as the Titans beat their Eastern District rival in a quarterfin­al.

Washington had 19 points and 18 rebounds along with three blocked shots, while Baines added 12 points and 14 boards and Elliott chipped in 14 points and 10 assists. The Bookers’ Triston Skipwith also had 10 points.

Lafayette 62, Phoebus 55 (OT): The Rams finally pulled away in overtime after the teams were tied at halftime and the end of regulation.

Lafayette will play Lake Taylor in a 7 p.m. semifinal Saturday at Scope.

Petersburg 89, New Kent 70: The host Crimson Wave outscored the Trojans 21-12 to finish the first half ahead 48-35.

Hopewell 90, Colonial Heights 46: Top-seeded Hopewell dominated the Colonials, so the Blue Devils and Crimson Wave, who are longtime rivals south of Richmond, will play in the other semifinal at Scope for a state berth.

Girls Class 3 Region A Tournament Lakeland 56, Lake Taylor 41:

Janae Carter’s 16 points led the Cavaliers, who rallied to earn a semifinal matchup against top-seeded Hopewell at 1 p.m. Saturday at Scope.

Lakeland trailed 35-33 to start the fourth quarter, but used a 12-3 spurt in the first five minutes of the final period to take control.

The Cavaliers’ Nyeshia Savage finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds, Jaelyn Brown had 11 points and Ja’Najah Artis had seven points and dished out 12 assists.

Hopewell 54, Booker T. Washington 14: The host Blue Devils ousted the Bookers. Erin Edmonds had 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Amiya Reese-Banks and Keeniya Kelley had 10 points apiece for Hopewell.

Norcom 72, York 39: Alaijah Kirk-Veal paced the Greyhounds with 20 points, Shamyah Price added 17 and Jesu Salinas finished with 16.

The Greyhounds (18-6) will face Lafayette in a semifinal at Scope at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Lafayette 43, Tabb 31: Alexis Blake (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Alexis Foster (10 points) led the Rams (18-6) past the Tigers in a clash of Bay Rivers District teams.

Private schools Pathways (Florida) 67, Veritas Collegiate Academy 64:

Playing in the National Associatio­n of Christian Athletes tournament in Dayton, Tennessee, the Chesapeake-based Spartans lost to an opponent from Orlando.

Koren Jones led Veritas with 23 points, Stephon Cherry had 13, Savon Saniford 12 and Majesty Dawson 11.
