Georgia State to meet ODU women

Monarchs will face 12th seed in their Sun Belt Tournament opener

Mikyla Tolivert scored 19 points and added six rebounds and seven assists as No. 12 seed Georgia State eased past No. 13 seed South Alabama 59-44 in a first-round game of the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament on Tuesday in Pensacola, Florida.

The Panthers (12-20) will face No. 5 seed Old Dominion (20-11) in a second-round game at 3 p.m. today.

Deasia Merrill contribute­d 16 points and eight rebounds for Georgia State.

Kelsey Thompson paced South Alabama (7-23) with 16 points.

Arkansas State 76, Louisiana Monroe 65:

Izzy Higginbott­om collected 19 points and six rebounds to lead No. 11 seed Arkansas State past No. 14 Louisiana Monroe in the Sun Belt Women’s Tournament.

The Red Wolves (12-18) will meet No. 6 Georgia Southern at 6 p.m. today in the second round.

Emma Merriweath­er and Aasia Sam scored 16 points each for Louisiana Monroe (7-23).

Late Monday ACC North Carolina 77, Florida 66:

North Carolina, desperate to get back in the conversati­on for an NCAA Tournament at-large berth, is doing so.

R.J. Davis scored 19 points, Leaky Black had 18 points and nine rebounds and UNC eased by Florida State in Tallahasse­e for its third straight victory.

Last year’s NCAA runner-up and this year’s preseason No. 1, the Tar Heels (19-11, 11-8 ACC) have endured a disappoint­ing season. But UNC pulled away in the first

half with 11 3-pointers in building a 43-25 lead. Davis and Caleb Love each made three 3-pointers in the first half.

UNC closes its regular season Saturday at home against Duke in a game featured on ESPN’s “College GameDay.”

Caleb Mills scored 19 points and Matthew Cleveland had 12 points and nine rebounds for FSU (9-21, 7-12), which plays at Virginia Tech on Saturday.

TOP25 No. 7 Baylor 74, Oklahoma State 68:

LJ Cryer and Dale Bonner each scored 15 points for the

Bears (22-8, 11-6 Big 12) against the Cowboys (16-14, 7-10) in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Jalen Bridges had 14 points and Adam Flagler added 13 for Baylor, which earned its second straight win since dropping consecutiv­e games at Kansas State and Kansas.

The Bears played without leading scorer Keyonte George, who sprained his right ankle during Saturday’s 81-72 victory over Texas.

John-Michael Wright scored 17 points for Oklahoma State, which is considered on the NCAA bubble.

WOMEN No. 9 Connecticu­t 60, Xavier 51:

Aaliyah Edwards scored 19 points as Connecticu­t secured the Big East regular-season title outright with a victory in Storrs, Connecticu­t.

Caroline Ducharme added 14 points and Lou Lopez Senechal scored 12 for the Huskies (26-5, 18-2 Big East), who have won a regular-season league title 29 times, including in each of the past 10 seasons.

Fernanda Ovalle had nine points to lead Xavier (7-22, 0-20), which lost its 19th consecutiv­e game.
