Nancy Jean Grant
Beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother, Nancy Jean Grant passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2023. She battled Parkinson’s Disease for many years but in the end she wanted no part of a long-drawnout end to her fabulous life. She had a massive stroke and died peacefully surrounded by those that loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Mabel Gloor and brother, Ray Gloor. She is survived by her husband, George Grant; her siblings, Eileen (Warren) Brey and William (Cathy) Gloor; her children, Adrienne (Brad) Hartgerink, Dianna (John) Screen, and Jordan (Ilham) Grant, and grandchildren, Megan (Beckett) Lee, Jake Screen, Skylar and Brett Hartgerink and Sophia, Alex, and Giada Grant, as well as countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
“The Queen” as she was fondly nicknamed, began her nursing journey in 1966 when she graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY. Her first job was a staff nurse at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy. She worked at University Hospital for 2 years in Cleveland, OH and as a Nursing Supervisor at a nursing home in Richmond. Many were impacted by her time at Riverside Regional Medical Center where she worked for 28 years; 26 of them as Nurse Manager on the Oncology unit. Nancy joined Sentara in 2006 as the primary Charge Nurse and worked there until her retirement in 2014. She held her Oncology nursing certification for 24 years and was an active member of the local chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society for more than 20 years, including board positions for the local chapter. Her partnership with Virginia Oncology Associates physicians throughout the years enhanced patient care and resulted in lifelong friendships. With 48 years in the field, you can only imagine the number of patients she cared for and the difference she had made; not only in the lives of her patients but also her colleagues. Her words of encouragement, her work ethic, her ability to teach a lesson without saying much, her wisdom, her old tricks of the trade, and her ability to make an impossible hectic day run smoothly, left a standing imprint on countless nurses.
Although nursing was a big part of her life, she had so many interests outside of her career. Prior to a reduction in balance and mobility due to her Parkinson’s, Nancy was an avid tennis player and you could find her on the courts in her spare time. Nancy and George were competitive mixed doubles partners for many years. She shared this love with her family, teaching both her children and grandchildren how to play. Nancy loved sunning herself while reading a good book at both the pool and the beach, but especially at her beloved Hilton Head. She loved Neil Diamond, John Denver, Garth Brooks, and Betty Bunny’s Birthday Day. She enjoyed making cookies with her grandkids, playing bridge with the same ladies for decades, watching sports and all holidays. Most of all, she loved her family. She touched so many lives and her love will shine on through all who knew her. The void that is left with us is immeasurable, but Heaven is a better place because she is playing tennis with the angels.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 4:00p.m., Sunday, March 5, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service.
