Whyte repeats in two events

Hampton Roads schools shut out of team crowns

Heritage star sprinter Madison Whyte defended her titles in the 55 and 300 meters, but it wasn’t enough for the Hurricanes to repeat as they finished behind Western Albemarle and Blacksburg at the Class 4 state indoor track and field championsh­ips on Tuesday in Lynchburg.

Whyte, who will run for Southern Cal next season, won the 55 meters in 6.94 seconds and the 300 in 37.28 seconds. She also placed third in the high jump.

Teammate Myzhane Solomon won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.28 seconds, Sanaa Wooden was third in the 300 and Sabria Wooden was third in the 500.

Deep Creek finished as boys runner-up in Class 4 behind Blacksburg.

Senior Quincy Dunn won the triple jump (46 feet, 2 inches) to lead the Hornets. He also ran on the second-place 4x200 team along with Demetrius Daniels, Jameel Vann and Harold Tettah. Amarion Harrell was runner-up in the 300 meters and Jaelyn Green was second in the 55 hurdles.

The King’s Fork girls finished fifth, led by the victorious 4x200 relay of Deja Ward, Andrea Watkins, Taylor Jennings-Ward and Courtney Johnson (1:43.30). Ward also won the triple jump (36-10 and was fourth in the 55, and Johnson was third in the 55 meters.

In Class 3, Tabb finished as runner-up behind Heritage of Lynchburg.

The winning 4x800 relay of Davin Tietz, Michael Baptist, Justin Zetterwall and Nick Smerlis (8:06.70) led the Tigers. Tietz also won the 1,000, and Smerlis finished third in the 1,600.

Lakeland sophomore Kamryn Monroe won the girls 55 meters (7.29) and helped lead the Cavaliers’ 4x200 relay to victory. Monroe, Brianna Goodman, Jada Carter and Hannah Joyner ran 1:46.76.

Tabb junior Lauren Pegher won the 1,000 (2:58.67) and helped lead the 4x800 relay to victory. Pegher, Kate Fiest, Aubrey Case and Corinne Lombardo posted a time of 9:45.74.
