Fitz-Gerald, ODU stay hot, rout NSU
Hunter Fitz-Gerald homered in his seventh straight game, going 2 for 5 with three RBIs as Old Dominion routed Norfolk State 16-7 in a college baseball game Tuesday at Bud Metheny Ballpark.
The Monarchs (12-1) have won 12 straight since a season-opening 7-6 loss to St. John’s in 10 innings.
Robbie O’Neal went 3 for 5 with two homers and four RBIs for ODU, while Camden Grimes went 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs and Kenny Lavari went 3 for 4 with two runs.
Manny Jackson went 3 for 5 with a homer, Dionte Brown went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and Jacob Council had a homer and two RBIs for the Spartans (2-9).
■ Virginia 7, Willian & Mary 3: Connelly Early pitched six strong innings to improve to 3-0 and Harrison Didawick went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs as No. 17 Virginia defeated William & Mary in Charlottesville. Ben Williamson and Joe Delossantos each hit solo homers for the Tribe (7-6). Early allowed two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and no walks for the Cavaliers (12-0).
■ Christopher Newport 6, Lynchburg 4: Scott Crosson collected four hits to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and Jay Cassady pitched seven solid innings as No. 18 Christopher Newport knocked off No. 12 Lynchburg on Tuesday in Newport News. Zach Dzarnowski added a pair of RBIs for the Captains (12-4). Cassady (2-1) allowed four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and one walk. CNU will visit Bridgewater at 3 p.m. today.
■ Virginia Tech 22, UMass Lowell 4: Clay Grady went 5 for 6 with a homer and six RBIs and and Eddie Eisert went 5 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs as Virginia Tech (10-2) routed UMass Lowell in Blacksburg. Henry Cooke had four of the Hokies’ 23 hits.
