George Mason tops state foe Richmond
Josh Oduro had a double-double and Ronald Polite put George Mason ahead with a 3-pointer with 47 seconds left in a 62-57 win over Richmond in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament in Brooklyn, New York.
Oduro scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds for the Patriots (20-12), who will face Saint Louis in a quarterfinal today. Polite also scored 16 points as George Mason pushed its winning streak to six games.
Tyler Burton finished with 23 points, six rebounds and two steals to lead the Spiders (15-18). Richmond also got 17 points and two blocks from Neal Quinn.
MORE ATLANTIC 10 TOURNAMENT Davidson 65, St. Bonaventure 54:
Desmond Watson had 17 points and Davidson (16-15) beat St. Bonaventure (14-18) in a secondround game.
The Wildcats will face VCU in a quarterfinal today. Saint Joseph’s 87, George Washington 76: Erik Reynolds II scored 34 points and went 12 of 12 from the line to lead the Hawks (16-16) past the Colonials (16-16) in a second-round game.
Saint Joseph’s will face Dayton in a quarterfinal today.
MOUNTAIN WEST TOURNAMENT
UNLV 78, Air Force 70 (OT): EJ Harkless scored 35 points, including 11 in the overtime, as UNLV (19-12) outlasted Air Force (14-18) in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas.
Jake Heidbreder paced the Falcons with 24 points.
Women
CAA TOURNAMENT Hofstra 61, UNC Wilmington 58:
Emma Von Essen made a game-tying and go-ahead 3-pointer about a minute apart in the fourth quarter to lead the No. 12 seed Pride (11-19) to a victory over the No. 13 seed Seahawks (5-25) in Towson, Maryland.
Hofstra will face No. 5 seed North Carolina A&T in today’s second round. The winner of that game will take on No. 4 seed William & Mary on Friday.
Late Tuesday
CAA FINAL Charleston 63, UNC Wilmington
Ryan Larson scored 23 points, 58: and his effort at both of ends of the floor late helped send Charleston past upset-minded UNC Wilmington in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament championship game in Washington, clinching an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
It’s Charleston’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2018 and sixth overall.
ATLANTIC 10 TOURNAMENT La Salle 73, Rhode Island 56: Jhamir Brickus had 18 points as La Salle (14-18) defeated Rhode Island (9-22) in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament in Brooklyn.
WEST COAST FINAL No. 9 Gonzaga 77, No. 16 Saint Mary’s 51: Drew Timme scored 18 points and became Gonzaga’s all-time leading scorer to lead the sharp-shooting Bulldogs past Saint Mary’s in the West Coast Conference Tournament championship game in Las Vegas.
The Zags (28-5) continued their domination of the WCC with their fourth consecutive tournament championship.
HORIZON FINAL Northern Kentucky 63, Cleveland
State 61: Marques Warrick scored 18 points and Sam Vinson added 16 to lead Northern Kentucky to a victory over Cleveland State for the Horizon League Tournament championship in Indianapolis.
The Norse (22-12) advance to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time since 2017.
SUMMIT FINAL Oral Roberts 92, North Dakota State 58: Max Abmas scored 26 points and distributed 11 assists and Oral Roberts (30-4) overwhelmed North Dakota State (16-17) in the Summit League Tournament championship game in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
NORTHEAST FINAL Merrimack 67, Fairleigh Dickinson 66: Ziggy Reid scored 23 points, Jordan Minor had 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists and host Merrimack closed on an 8-0 run to beat Fairleigh Dickinson and capture the Northeast Conference Tournament championship in North Andover, Massachusetts.
Merrimack (18-16), which is ineligible for the NCAA Tournament due to a four-year transition to Division I, closed its season on an 11-game winning streak. Fairleigh Dickinson (19-15) had already secured the conference’s automatic bid in the Big Dance, but was seeking its seventh NEC Tournament title.
