ODU completes three-game sweep
Monarchs move to 18-2 by dominating UL Monroe in La.
Old Dominion completed a three-game Sun Belt-opening sweep at UL Monroe by defeating the Warhawks 6-2 Sunday in Louisiana.
Camden Grimes belted a home run, Tyler Wheeler was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and his brother Thomas Wheeler was 2 for 4 with a triple, a run and an RBI for the Monarchs (18-2, 3-0). Starter Dylan Brown, winner Bailey Matela (2-0), Trent Buchanan, Ben Moore and Robert Cook combined to pitch effectively against the Warhawks (7-14, 0-3).
Hofstra 4, William & Mary 3: Hofstra avoided a three-game sweep with a home victory over W&M, which led 3-0 after a three-run third but never scored again in Hempstead, New York.
Ben Williamson’s RBI single -one of his three hits -- and Max Winters’ two-run single put the Tribe (11-10, 3-3 Colonial Athletic Association) ahead, but Hofstra (6-12, 2-4) made it 3-1 as Kevin Bruggeman scored on Santino Rosso’s groundout in the fourth.
In the seventh, the Pride tied the game on Anthony D’Onofrio’s two-run double off Nate Knowles and went ahead on Dylan Palmer’s RBI single.
VMI 15, Norfolk State 4: VMI (13-8) gained a three-game sweep of Norfolk State (3-15) with a triumph in Lexington. At the top of the Keydets’ lineup, Ty Swaim was 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBIs and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy graduate Zac Morris was 2 for 4 with three runs and three RBIs. Justin Starke was 2 for 2 with three runs, two RBIs and two walks, and Hampton High graduate Trey Morgan was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
Riley (1-0) pitched four innings for the victory, and Mac Yarbrough (0-1) absorbed the loss.
NSU’s Justin Journette hit a fourth-inning homer and drove in two runs, but the Keydets’ 10-run fourth inning put them ahead 15-1.
Eastern Mennonite 9, Virginia Wesleyan 2: EMU (5-13, 1-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) handled the Marlins in Virginia Beach to gain a split of their two-game series. The first three batters in the Royals’ order -- Logan Mason, Ethan Spraker and Nansemond River High graduate Nick Arnold -- combined for 10 hits, seven runs and four RBIs.
For the Marlins (3-12-1, 2-1-1), Samuel Kasprow doubled, tripled and scored a run, and Jaelen Hines had a hit and a run. Connor Mock (0-3) took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) and seven hits in two innings.
Apprentice School 8, Saint Vincent 6: Apprentice (21-5) swept Saint Vincent in a fourgame
series at War Memorial Stadium, finishing the task Sunday. Justin Bradshaw was 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, and Camden Weston was 2 for 5 with two RBIs.
Tyler Winegrad (1-1) got the victory. Apprentice led 8-1 after five innings before the Bearcats (5-8) of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, threatened late. Logan Mize gained his fifth save.
Miami takes all three vs. No. 17 Hokies
No. 17 Virginia Tech suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of homestanding Miami, falling 21-6 and 12-9 in a Saturday doubleheader whose results could knock the Hokies from the nation’s top 25.
Ocean Lakes High graduate Carson DeMartini provided a highlight for Tech (12-7, 1-5 ACC), slugging two solo home runs against Miami (14-6, 5-1).
In Game 1, Miami’s Dario Gomez was 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs.
In Game 2, the Hurricanes’ CJ Kayfus went 3 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs.
The Hokies’ 7-6 lead into the eighth inning evaporated, though Sam Tackett homered and drove in four runs and Carson Jones had a home run and two RBIs.
Friday, in the series opener, Miami won 4-3 on Yohandy Morales’ walk-off double to right-center in the ninth. Tech starter Griffin Green struck out six, and teammates Eddie Eisert and Jones popped home runs.
