Indian River rises five spots by beating Nansemond River

Poquoson became the fourth football team in Hampton Roads to lead its region entering the regular season’s final three weeks. The Islanders (5-2) took over the top spot in Class 2 with Friday’s 20-7 victory over Smithfield.

Maury (Class 5 Region B), Phoebus (Class 4 Region A) and Green Run (Class 5 Region A), the leading three of the 757Teamz Top 15, maintained their No. 1 seedings. The teams that finish the regular season at No. 1 are guaranteed home-field advantage through at least the region championship games.

In other storylines from the week:

■ Indian River climbed five spots to playoff position at No. 5 in Class 5 Region A with a 45-38 victory over Nansemond River, which fell a spot to fourth in Class 4 Region A.

■ A 13-7 defeat to Salem made Kempsville slip from third to seventh in Class 5 Region A, which has a logjam well behind Green Run.

■ Lafayette ascended one position to No. 2 in Class 3 Region A with its stunningly lopsided 52-0 win over Tabb, which fell from second to fourth. Those teams could meet again in the playoffs.

■ The top four teams in Class 6 Region A are all from the Richmond area. If the playoffs began today, they would feature a fascinating matchup: No. 5 Oscar Smith, seeded lower than usual, at No. 4 Glen Allen, a squad new to Class 6 and coached by former Oscar Smith and Virginia Cavaliers standout running back Perry Jones.

In most regions, the top eight will advance to the playoffs. The standings include team, overall record and power rating.
