Grassfield stops Western Branch to win region field hockey crown

Field hockey CLASS 6 REGION A CHAMPIONSH­IP Grassfield 1, Western Branch 0:

Kalyn Fluker scored as the Grizzlies outlasted their Chesapeake rivals Wednesday to win the region title and a state quarterfin­al close to home.

Cali Hyman recorded the shutout in goal for Grassfield. Both teams advance to the state quarterfin­als.

CLASS 5 REGION B SEMIFINALS Nansemond River 2, Menchville 1:

Brylee Johnston scored the winning goal in overtime after Brayden Johnston scored in regulation for the Warriors, who will stay at home for the 6 p.m. championsh­ip game Friday against No. 1 seed Woodside. The Wolverines ousted Maury 2-0.

CLASS 4 REGION A CHAMPIONSH­IP Gloucester 7, Jamestown 0:

Reese Miller and Leigha Germain each scored twice to give the top-seeded Dukes (16-2) the region title, and Miller had four assists.

Kamryn McDonough, Ady Jeffrey and Kaylee Hall contribute­d one goal each, and McDonough had three assists.

In the state quarterfin­als Tuesday, Gloucester will host Atlee at 7 p.m., while Jamestown (10-9) will travel to Powhatan.

TCIS SEMIFINALS Norfolk Academy 11, Cape Henry 0:

Brooke Bettencour­t led the host Bulldogs with four goals and contribute­d one assist, while Joji Purdy netted three goals and an assist.

Lizzie Adams added two goals, Gretchen Scott scored one goal and assisted another, and Mia Jones contribute­d a goal and an assist.

The Bulldogs, No. 1 in the 757Teamz Top 15, will meet Catholic at 6 p.m. Friday at the Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach for the TCIS trophy before both teams advance to the VISAA state tournament.

Catholic 3, Walsingham Academy 1:

Izzy Zaszewski scored twice, improving to 3 for 3 on penalty strokes this season, and Brooke Sunderland scored as the second-seeded Crusaders earned a berth in the championsh­ip game for the first time in more than a decade.

Boys volleyball CLASS 5 REGION A SEMIFINALS Kempsville 3, Kellam 2:

The Chiefs overcame a two-set deficit to end the Knights’ season as Ryan Pecora had 30 kills, five blocks and seven digs. Kempsville ensured a state quarterfin­al berth and will return to Deep Creek on Tuesday to play Ocean Lakes for the region championsh­ip.

Ocean Lakes 3, Hickory 1:

Vincent Yi, Barrett Scharfe and Nathan Brock combined for 39 kills for the Dolphins as they halted the Hawks’ campaign and wrapped up a state tourney bid.

CLASS 5 REGION B SEMIFINALS

Granby 3, Maury 2: Top-seeded Granby survived a comeback by Maury to defeat the fourthseed­ed Commodores 25-16, 25-16, 23-25, 24-26, 15-11. The victory advanced the Comets to the state tournament.

TCIS CHAMPIONSH­IP

Cape Henry 3, Norfolk Christian 0: AJ Todl had 12 kills and a season-high 29 digs for the Dolphins. Ty Adamson had two aces and 16 digs. Middles Nate Jensen and Ryan Hummel had four kills apiece and combined for three blocks. Tanner Schaedel led the offense with 15 kills and contribute­d 12 digs. Libero Wan Chae served two aces and had nine digs. Kyle Krooner had 38 assists.

Girls volleyball CLASS 5 REGION B SEMIFINALS

Menchville 3, Maury 1: Kamryn Keasey had 18 kills and two blocks to guide the Monarchs to a state tournament berth and end the No. 2 seed Commodores’ season. Emma Wade had 44 assists, Lilly Abbitt had 11 kills and Arianna Maldonado and Caroline Clements combined for 13 kills. Menchville plays Peninsula

District rival Woodside on Tuesday at Maury for the region championsh­ip.

Top-seeded Woodside defeated Granby 3-1.

CLASS 2 REGION A QUARTERFIN­ALS Bruton 3, Poquoson 1:

Mina Faw had three aces, 13 kills and five blocks to propel the Panthers. Cassie Hall had 10 kills and three blocks, Aliyah Millner had five blocks and Juliana Simon provided four aces, seven assists and three digs.

The Panthers will go to Windsor for a 7 p.m. Monday semifinal, and the winner will advance to the state tournament. The second-seeded Dukes outlasted seventh-seeded King William in five sets.
