William & Mary captures its first victory of season

Nylah Young had 21 points as William & Mary gained its first victory of the season Friday, defeating Tennessee State in the first round of the FIU Thanksgivi­ng Classic in Miami.

The Tribe (1-4) will be back in action at 2 p.m. Sunday in the championsh­ip game against Florida Internatio­nal (3-2), which cruised to an 88-59 victory over Bryant (3-3).

W&M’s Kayla Rolph played a major all-around role in the victory, adding 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Bella Nascimento had eight points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals, and Cassidy Geddes had seven points, five assists and three steals.

TSU (1-4) got 19 points from Sanaa’ St. Andre.

Early in the third quarter, W&M went on an 11-0 run for a 43-30 lead, only to see the Tigers pull to 44-42. The Tribe responded with a 6-1 burst bridging the third and fourth quarters and remained comfortabl­y ahead.

More state No. 9 Virginia Tech 59, Kansas 58:

Elizabeth Kitley had 31 points, 18 rebounds five blocks as the Hokies (4-1) escaped an upset bid by Kansas (2-2) at the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic.

Holly Kersgieter’s 3-pointer with 3:16 to go gave the Jayhawks a 58-56 lead, but Georgia Amoore, who had 14 points and seven assists, answered with a 3-pointer with 2:57 remaining. Neither team scored again, with Kansas’ Taiyanna Jackson missing two free throws at the 1:45 mark.

The Hokies forced Ryan Cobbins into an airball in the final second. S’Mya Nichols led the Jayhawks with 13 points.

East Tennessee State 55, Norfolk State 35:

NSU (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season, falling to ETSU (4-1) in the Miami Thanksgivi­ng Tournament at the

Hurricanes’ Watsco Center.

The Buccaneers, who led 18-7 after one quarter and remained comfortabl­y in front, made seven 3-pointers to NSU’s one.

Junior Da’Naijah Williams and freshman Da’Brya Clark led the Spartans with nine points each. They grabbed seven and five rebounds, respective­ly,

New Mexico State 78, Hampton 47:

Naila Harding had 22 points for the Aggies (3-2), who overcame the Pirates (0-4) in the first round of the Long Island Classic in a New York arena 6.8 miles from where HU coach David Six grew up.

Cheyenne Talbot scored 25 points and Camryn Hill had 13 for HU.

NMSU led 38-33 when Talbot was whistled for her fourth foul, and the Aggies expanded their lead to 51-36.

Hampton will play Long Island at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Virginia 81, Tulane 59:

Virginia (4-1) erased a 15-point deficit to beat the Green Wave at the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic.

The Cavaliers, who will play No. 7 LSU on Saturday, received 49 points from their reserves. Yonta Vaughn, who finished with a career-high 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. Sam Brunelle (12) and Alexia Smith (10) also scored in double digits, and Kymora Johnson dished out a season-high nine assists.

Aaronette Vonleh scored 19 points for the Buffaloes (6-0) at the Paradise Jam. They shot a season-high 59.7% (37 of 62) in winning their sixth straight by double digits. Eniya Russell had 14 points for the Wildcats (2-4), who committed 27 turnovers.

No. 7 LSU 99, Niagara 65:

Aneesah Morrow had 28 points and 10 rebounds for LSU (6-1) against the Purple Eagles at the Cayman Islands Classic. Star Angel Reese didn’t make the trip and missed her third straight game for the defending national champion Tigers.

No. 10 N.C. State 79, Cincinnati 45:

Madison Hayes had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolfpack (6-0) against the Bearcats (2-3) at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands. Hayes led six players in double figures for the Wolfpack, including Princess Anne High product Aziaha James with 13.
