Norfolk State CB coach to reunite with Wilder
Wilson is headed to Tennessee Tech
Norfolk State football coach Dawson Odums now has an opening on his coaching staff.
Cornerbacks coach Frank Wilson Jr. is leaving NSU to join Tennessee Tech as assistant head coach, special teams coordinator and linebackers coach, sources confirmed to The Pilot on Thursday. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg first reported the news.
Wilson will be reunited with new Tennessee Tech head coach Bobby Wilder after the two worked together at Old Dominion from 2016 to 2019. While with ODU, Wilson worked in quality control, with special teams and cornerbacks.
Wilson spent one season with the Spartans, but his impact was certainly felt on the field.
Under Wilson, NSU had the highest-rated defensive back duo of any HBCU school in Terron Mallory and Devon Allen, according to Pro Football Focus.
Norfolk State landed two defensive backs on the All-MEAC team with the help of Wilson. Both Allen and R.J. Coles made the All-MEAC second-team defense.
Wilson came to Norfolk State after spending a year at North Carolina as a senior special teams analyst. During his time in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels had the No. 22 special teams unit in the country, according to Pro Football Focus. Their special teams grade of 82.5 ranked fourth in the ACC.
He joined the Tar Heels in July 2022, roughly five months after being hired as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach at McNeese State.
Before McNeese State, Wilson was a special teams analyst at Houston in 2020 and 2021.
Wilson played defensive back at Dayton University. During his time there, the Flyers were 37-7 and won a Pioneer League title.
