Methodist women surge to victory

Methodist’s women’s basketball team took over in the fourth quarter Thursday night and defeated Virginia Wesleyan 68-52 at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach.

Aniyah Tate had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Monarchs (6-2), who have won five games in a row. Grace Harriman had 14 points and seven rebounds and Mekayla Clarke had eight points and nine rebounds for the Marlins (3-7), who have lost three consecutiv­e.

Leading 29-28 at halftime, Methodist outscored VWU 18-10 in the third quarter, thanks to a 7-0 flurry for a 40-32 lead. The Monarchs extended the margin in the fourth.

No. 10 Baylor 99, Delaware State 37: Aijha Blackwell and Bella Fontleroy both had 14 points and 11 rebounds in the final regular-season game at the Ferrell Center for the Bears (8-0), where they were 437-100 in 35 years. They are moving into the new Foster Pavilion when they play their next home game against TCU in their Big 12 home opener Jan. 3.

Late Wednesday MEN UNLV 79, No. 8 Creighton 64:

Kalib Boone scored 25 points as UNLV (4-4) led nearly the entire way against Creighton at the Jack Jones Classic in Henderson, Nevada. Dedan Thomas Jr. added 16 points and nine assists for UNLV.

Ryan Kalkbrenne­r led the 13 ½-point favorite Bluejays (8-2) with 22 points.

No. 15 Florida Atlantic 94, Florida Internatio­nal 60: Johnell Davis scored 16 points and Alijah Martin had 14 as FAU (8-2) took a 12-2 lead and rolled past rival FIU (3-8) in Boca Raton. Jaidon Lipscomb scored 17 for FIU.

No. 18 Brigham Young 90, Denver 74:

Jaxson Robinson made eight 3-pointers and scored 28 points, both career bests for the host Cougars (9-1), and Noah Waterman finished with 22 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. tah graduate transfer Jaxon Brenchley led Denver (6-5) with a career-high 21 points and seven rebounds.

Chicago State 75, No. 25 Northweste­rn 73:

Wesley Cardet Jr. scored 30 points for the visiting Cougars (4-9), who were 24 ½-point underdogs to the Wildcats (7-2), according to FanDuel SportsBook, and were 0-15 against them all-time.

Boo Buie, who led the Wildcats with 23 points, made two layups 41 seconds apart to put Northweste­rn in front 67-65 with 2:30 left. Cardet tied it 26 seconds later and then hit a 3-pointer with 1:23 remaining for a 70-67 lead. Chicago State sealed the victory with three late free throws from A.J. Neal and two by Noble Crawford.

Longwood 80, Milwaukee 67:

Szymon Zapala and Walyn Napper scored 24 points apiece as the visiting Lancers (11-1) extended their winning streak to 11.

Zapala grabbed eight rebounds, and Napper added five rebounds and nine assists. The pair combined for 19-of-30 shooting from the field. Erik Pratt led the Panthers (4-7) with 12 points

Howard 88, Regent 49: Seth Towns and Bryce Harris each scored 11 points for the Bison (4-6)

as they won in Washington. Towns had five rebounds and six assists.

Darrin Clark finished with 14 points for the Royals (0-7). Joakim Marie-Joseph added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Arkansas State 75, Louisville 63:

Caleb Fields had 20 points and eight assists as Arkansas State achieved its first victory over a Power Five conference opponent since the 2014-15 season. The Red Wolves also won on the road for the first time this season in six games.

Brandon Huntley-Hatfield scored a career-best 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Louisville (4-6). Cardinals forward J.J. Traynor and center Dennis Evans did not play because of injuries, and Louisville dismissed junior guard Koron Davis earlier in the day.

Liberty 74, Tennessee State 52:

Kyle Rode had 18 points, Joseph Venzant scored 12 points and added 11 rebounds, and the Flames (8-3) beat the Tigers (6-5) in Lynchburg.

WOMEN No. 5 Texas 88, Arizona 75:

Rori Harmon had 19 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, and Taylor Jones added 16 points as the visiting Longhorns (11-0) extended their best start in eight years by shooting 51.6%. Kailyn Gilbert led Arizona (7-3) with 26 points.
