ODU sweeps pair from South Alabama

Old Dominion swept a doublehead­er Friday from conference foe South Alabama, winning 8-2 and 8-3 in Norfolk.

In Game 1, a solo homer by Kyle Edwards and a three-run blast by Hunter Cole, both in the second inning, gave the Monarchs (15-11, 4-4 Sun Belt) a 4-2 lead.

Reliever Kellen Davis (3-0) got one out in the second inning before John Holobetz and Jacob Gomez combined for seven shutout innings, limiting the Jaguars to two hits. Also for ODU, Steven Meier was 2 for 4 and scored twice.

In Game 2, the Jaguars (15-12, 2-6) were down just 2-1 before ODU put together four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh. Edwards was 4 for 4, Luke Waters was 2 for 3 with a homer two runs and two RBIs and Jake Ticer also homered.

Delaware State 6-6, Norfolk State 5-2:

The Hornets (6-16, 5-6 Northeast Conference) swept the host Spartans (7-19, 4-7), coming from behind in both games. In the opener, NSU took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but couldn’t hold it.

Joey Current’s two-run single to left field in the seventh gave the Hornets a 5-4 lead, and he walked with the bases loaded for a 6-4 edge in the eighth.

NSU’s Camrin Sturgeon singled home Jalan Jones in the eighth to make it 6-5, but Evan Bouldin struck out the side in the ninth for a save. Jones and Justin Journette each had two hits and scored twice.

In Game 2, NSU led 2-0 thanks to Kydese Queen’s two-run first-inning single before surrenderi­ng a six-run ninth. Spartans starter John Horton pitched seven shutout innings, giving up just two hits and two walks. Reliever Nolan Manzer (2-1) shut out the Hornets in the eighth, but struggled in the ninth. Two basesloade­d walks tied the game, Bouldin’s infield hit gave DSU a 3-2 lead and Chris Amparo’s threerun double capped the uprising.

William & Mary 9, Delaware 4:

Anthony Greco was 4 for 4 with a run and two RBIs for the Tribe (19-7, 3-1 Coastal Athletic Associatio­n) in a series opener against the Blue Hens (12-12, 2-2) in Newark. Ben Parker was 2 for 4 and scored three runs. He hit a home run, as did Jerry Barnes III and Kevin Francella.

W&M’s Luke Calveric and Owen Pierce combined for 4 ⅔ innings of scoreless relief.

Apprentice 7-1, Virginia State 1-5:

The Builders (26-6) split with the Trojans (9-15) in Petersburg.

In Game 1, Nick Redman (5-0) struck out seven and held the Trojans to a run and three hits. Caleb Russell scored three runs, Jeremy Harmon scored two and Brayden Heath, Nate Yeary and Riggs Ellis each had two hits.

In Game 2, Joseph Hastings pitched a three-hitter, striking out nine.
