NEWS BRIEFS Former Egyptian president freed Chicago Bears sign quarterback Sanchez

-

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was freed Friday from the Cairo hospital where he was being detained, six years after he was ousted at the peak of the Arab Spring populist uprising. Mubarak, 88, was taken from the Maadi Military Hospital, where he was living under guard, to a mansion in Heliopolis. Mubarak, who came to power in 1981, was accused of human-rights abuses, including conspiring with police to kill 239 protesters in Tahrir Square.

The Chicago Bears signed quarterback Mark Sanchez, a former starter with the New York Jets, to a one-year contract Friday. Sanchez is expected to back up Mike Glennon next season. The Bears, who went 3-13 last season, cut longtime starting quarterback Jay Cutler this month and signed Glennon, who had played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to a three-year deal. Sanchez was a backup with the Dallas Cowboys last season.
