BEST BET: RACE 8, ENSTONE

- RON GIERKINK @DRFGierkink

FIRST RACE

LEGAL DISPUTE is debuting with a speed pedigree, after working extensively at Tampa over the winter. His work tab on the Tapeta here this month is light, but he doesn’t have much to beat in this $10K dash. SILKEN THOMAS closed inside for second behind the heavily-favored runaway winner in his improved second start just nine days ago. TIGNE was competitive on occasion on the dirt at Penn National, and could be the fittest runner in the field.

SECOND RACE

TUITION was a bit player on the dirt at Tampa during the winter, and maybe he’ll find his calling on the Tapeta. The first-time gelding is making his first start for a trainer who’s posted phenomenal numbers with new shooters since the beginning of 2016. MISTER NADA rallied wide from mid-pack for second in his return. The stretch-out from five and a half to seven furlongs might be to his benefit. SHOT FOR SHOT has worked decently and gets Da Silva, who was aboard for both of his victories.

THIRD RACE

AWESOME AT LAST showed nothing after getting wiped out at the break the only time he saw action over a year ago in a Gulfstream turf sprint. After wintering in Florida, the 5yo should be pretty fit for his first start for a high-percentage trainer. BEST BOY benefited from an inside bias when a non-threatening seventh in his comeback, a race he probably needed. NEVER WORN is also worth a look in his second race off the bench.

FOURTH RACE

VOLSTEAD stalked on the outside over an inside-favoring track en route to running second behind a rival who benefited from the bias April 15. That was his first outing in seven months, and it should set him up nicely for this one. BRING ON THE BULL landed on the edges after a wide trip over an inside-biased track April 16, from which the winner exited to finish second for $6.25K. HEY BEAR comes off a troubled fourth behind VOLSTEAD. Use him on the bottom of exotics, along with WINSTANLEY and RUNAWAY PEPPER.

FIFTH RACE

LAND HO was competitive on the Tapeta last year before heading to Gulfstream, where he struggled on dirt and turf early in the winter. He’s returning from a break with a new trainer, Kevin Attard, who’s enlisted Da Silva for the mount. AUGUSTO B comes off an overdue maiden win on the Tampa turf. His Tapeta form in the fall was decent, and he wouldn’t be much of a surprise. BAKERSFIELD rode an inside bias in his recent second-out maiden score, from which he was claimed by trainer Norm McKnight.

SIXTH RACE

FIELD OF COURAGE has a history of firing while fresh. After wintering in Ocala, he would appear to be cranked up off the long layoff, and the refugee from the 2015 Canadian Triple Crown is tagged for the first time for $40K. CONSTANTINO is competing for $40K for just the second time, following a winter break. The flashy chestnut has worked well, but his laid-back style is a negative in a field without much speed. SAN NICOLA THUNDER found the mark first-time out last year in a turf sprint. Use him underneath in vertical bets, along with the popular 9yo RUN TO THE BANK.

SEVENTH RACE

WAUBAUSHENE pressed an honest pace before weakening to third when returning to action going five and a half furlongs. He has another eighth of a mile to work with this time, and should be dangerous with that prep under his girth. MY WAY TAPPER has worked encouragingly for a success-

ful layoff trainer. He came charging from off lively fractions to capture his debut at 2, before a troubled sixth-place finish going long in the Display Stakes. TOTALLY UNEXPECTED finished fourth in two restricted stakes at 2, and might not need one. TOUGH EQUATION is a wild card off his $25K maiden victory on the Fair Grounds turf. FG shippers have disappointed at Keeneland.

EIGHTH RACE

ENSTONE went clear on the lead along the inside over an outside-favoring track before dropping a half-length decision in the Nov. 12 Princess Elizabeth Stakes. The daughter of Tiznow has worked quickly for her return, and should be well-suited to the seven-furlong distance of this stakes for Canadian-breds. GHOSTLY PRESENCE won the mile and a sixteenth Princess Elizabeth after a stalking trip in the two-path. She’s going on Lasix, and her runaway debut score is an indication that she can fire big when fresh. CINDERVELLA is another comebacker with Woodbine Oaks aspirations who could have a say in the outcome. She worked twice at Gulfstream before posting several solid drills here on the Tapeta. The unbeaten ELLAN VANNIN wintered in Ontario, and might need one.

NINTH RACE

GLIDING BY has been idle since running second on the grass at Gulfstream Feb. 19 behind a sharp Conquest Babayaga, who subsequently won a N3X at Keeneland with an 88 Beyer. She’s worked well on the Tapeta, over which she’s yet to compete, and should be in the hunt. KASUGA didn’t show much early in the Championship Meet at Gulfstream, but will likely be a speed threat in her first start since being reunited with trainer Marty Drexler. LILLY’S GOLDIE nearly prevailed off a long layoff last June, and went on to have a productive campaign.

TENTH RACE

BEN LOMOND raced wide throughout over an inside-preferred track while closing from fourth to finish second in his improved second start April 16. COURTLY MANNER was bumped at the start in his comeback against open maiden special company. Give him a mulligan here with blinkers off. NUPOGODI closed three-wide from left field to finish a lapped-on second at first asking Dec. 2. THE DOCTOR ran wide against the bias when sixth in his return. Use him on the bottom of intra-race wagers, along with GRIN N’ BEAR and JOIN THE RUSH.
