Cajun Delta Dawn may run in Azalea

- By Mary Rampellini

Cajun Delta Dawn emerged as one of the top 2-year-old fillies of the spring-summer meet a year ago at Gulfstream Park, where she won the first four races of her career. She could see local action again soon.

Trainer David Fawkes said Friday that Cajun Delta Dawn is possible for the $75,000 Azalea on July 1.

Cajun Delta Dawn launched her 3-year-old season last week at Churchill Downs, and after pushing the pace from post 14 in the Grade 2 Eight Belles, she finished eighth. The start was her first in five months. Cajun Delta Dawn is now back home at Gulfstream.

“She got a lot out of it,” Fawkes said.

Cajun Delta Dawn began her career in a maiden special weight at Gulfstream last June. She then captured the track’s $75,000 Cassidy and the Desert Vixen and Susan’s Girl divisions of the Florida Sire Stakes before closing her year in Louisiana with a runner-up finish in the Grade 3, $400,000 Delta Downs Princess on Nov. 19.

The Azalea is a seven-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies. Fawkes also has Florida Fabulous, who won her first two starts this year at Gulfstream before finishing 10th in the Eight Belles, under consideration for the Azalea.

Fawkes said Florida Fabulous did not care for the sloppy track in the Eight Belles. He said both fillies came out of the race in excellent condition, and like Cajun Delta Dawn, Florida Fabulous is back at Gulfstream.

“I’m going to try to separate them,” said Fawkes.

Shes Got the Look returns

Shes Got the Look, who won her career debut by 16 1/4 lengths last August at Gulfstream, will make her first start at age 3 in the ninth race Sunday. The optional $12,500 claiming sprint over seven furlongs carries first-level allowance conditions and is restricted to fillies and mares bred in Florida.

“That’s a tough race,” said Fawkes, who will try to beat Shes Got the Look with another promising 3-year-old filly, Sweet Tooth Haven.

Shes Got the Look won a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies bred in Florida in her only start, covering the distance in 1:03.60. Tyler Gaffalione has the mount for Red Oak Stable and trainer Todd Pletcher.

Money Or Love is moving back into the statebred ranks after a pair of productive starts against open company. She won a $35,000 starter allowance April 13 at Gulfstream and in her most recent start was third in an optional $25,000 claimer over a mile. She is further appealing as a four-time winner who drew well in post 9.

Another contender is Flash Jak, who won at this level April 23 at Gulfstream.
