Qualifiers for WCH take center stage

- PETER T. FORNATALE

The Triple Crown may be in the rearview mirror, but the action continues unabated on DRF Tournaments this weekend.

The World Championship of Handicapping will be featured with several preliminary contests, the first being a firstround event that costs $95 and will send one in seven entries to the recently announced Grade 1 qualifier on July 8, held in conjunction with Belmont’s Stars and Stripes Day. From the Grade 1, one in 10 will win $5,000 buy-ins to the $1 million, no-takeout WCH.

There also will be $11 feeders where one in 10 entrants will win their $95 entry fees to the first-round WCH qualifiers.

The other main focus on DRFT this weekend will be on feeding players into next weekend’s qualifiers for the Wynn Challenge and the Del Mar Handicapping Championship. The Wynn contest is a mythical-money event focusing on Del Mar and Saratoga held at the Wynn Las Vegas on Aug. 4-5. The Del Mar contest is a major live-bankroll event held ontrack July 29-30. Note that in addition to the expected $300,000-plus prize pool, any player who wins the Del Mar contest and then takes the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge will receive a $1 million bonus.

For the Wynn contest feeders, players put up $12, and the top 10 percent will win their $108 buy-ins to the qualifier on Sunday, June 25. Out of that event, one in 27 will win grandprize packages worth $2,500, including $500 in travel money.

For the Del Mar feeders, players have two options to win the $400 to play in the Sunday, June 25, qualifier. There’s a $44 contest where the top 10 percent win in and a $90 feeder that sends one in five to the qualifier. From that event, one in 22 players will win $7,000 Del Mar entries and $500 for travel.

Winner-takes-all events also have been picking up steam on DRFT. These events, which cost anywhere from $5 to $55, allow players to compete for site credit. There is an array of options, with some contests allowing five players and others 10. These contests are good ways to get some action and fund your future contest play.
