How to play the Pick 5

- by Kenny Peck

RACE 7: Using the two likely speeds, LUCKY STRIKE DEL CO CO and WELL COMPOSED, as this turf route seems a little light on pace. The former held gamely for the place at this same level last time after setting the pace from the start while the latter looks like the main pace prompter who could get first run on the pacesetter (2).

RACE 8: TRUE ROMANCE looks like the main speed from her inside post, and with a clean break she has a big shot to steal this. She does tend to run 2nd, however, making it necessary to include a couple of others, so I'll also use APRIL GAZE, who has enough early zip to stay close, and LITTLE CHERIE, who could be the main threat in the lane (3).

RACE 9: Using them all in this maiden claimer on the turf, which by definition is a race in which to spread. LEAD INVESTOR and HAT IN THE RING are preferred but there are several runners in here with big wake-up potential and it's certainly a race where something wild could happen (10).

RACE 10: MAJESTIC AFFAIR makes his first start in almost a year to the day but he has been working very well toward this return, and he lands in a seemingly good spot in terms of pace, as he figures to be prominent from the start and the fractions could be controlled. RED DRAGON TATTOO has some early speed of his own, and the rail, and he'll likely look to steal it under Paco Lopez (2).

RACE 11: Standing alone with STRAIGHTAWAY MAY, who ran well in both of his two turf tries to date, and if he's able to run to those Beyers he's going to be a handful in this finale. The layoff is a slight concern but given the way he's veen working it's a better bet that he comes back running for trainer Wesley Ward (1). THE PLAY: 3,8 / 1, 2, 4 / ALL / 1, 2 / 3 = 120 Combinations ($60 Ticket)
