How to play the Pick 5

- by Kenny Peck

RACE 7:

Using them all in this turf route, which could be pared down some if the later legs were unwieldy. But with some solid standouts in later legs maybe this is the spot to take a shot at getting some value (8).

RACE 8:

SUMMER READING is obviously the horse to beat based on her Beyers, and it's not going to be easy to knock her off, especially if she is able to shake loose easily enough from the rail. But FUSAICHI RED has to be respected off her last effort and back figures, and KELSOCAIT does have enough speed to possibly outrun the favorite and seize the early lead (3).

RACE 9:

WAR FLAG has been away since last summer but trainer Shug McGaughey is always tough here, and with runners getting Lasix for the first time (35%). MY ENIGMA sprinted in his first start off the break, and that was likely a prep for this, as he has done his best work going long on the turf. KHARAFA has some of the better Beyers in the field and past success over this course (3).

RACE 10:

TIMELINE is a clear standout as the prohibitive favorite in the Pegasus, with a figure edge that makes him way too tough to go past. Further, he seems to have a pace edge in this short field, and that makes him an easy choice as a single (1).

RACE 11:

LEROIDS MOMMIE is the filly to beat based on her Beyers, which are consistent and tops in this field. She's the lone "A" play, and a horse I'd use as a single in multiple tickets with the first four legs as laid out above, but her tendency to run 2nd is a slight concern. So for this ticket I'll also include CRAZY DAISY, who stretches out in her 2nd try on turf, as her first effort on the surface gives her some credibility (2). THE PLAY: ALL / 1, 4, 5 / 1A, 2,7 / 2 / 4, 6 = 144 Combinations ($72 Ticket)
