How to play the Pick 4

- by Kenny Peck

RACE 7:

PEPPY MILLER didn't run her best race last time but she had a clear excuse given the race flow, which greatly favored speed-types, as evidenced by the inverted "S" in the running line; better set up very likely today. STEEL CUT is another who figures to benefit from the expected pace scenario, as she'll also be looking to close and she should get ample pace. GIRL POWER is the main speed in the field and is a threat based on her best figures (3).

RACE 8:

MYWOMANFROMTOKYO has speed and the rail and she could be the main speed; clearly loves this strip. BROOKLYNSWAY has been away for nearly a full year but she has a class edge and she hails from a barn which does well enough with absentees (2).

RACE 9:

PETROV comes out of three straight races which set up very well for closers, thanks to the presence of a lot of speed, but he could prove to be the one they have to reel in tonight in this Iowa Derby; tough if allowed to shake loose. SILVER DUST went down as the the odds-on favorite in his return from the short break but he actually did well to close for the show, as the winner, McCormick, benefited from a forward trip; can turn the tables here. IMPRESSIVE EDGE has only routed twice and though he lost each time he was in against the likes of Timeline and Always Dreaming; nice works for this. JERRID is a "B" play on split tickets but I'll include him on this caveman play on the off chance he moves forward off that last score (4).

RACE 10:

P J'S MEMORIES gets back to six furlongs, and she does seem to be at her best at this distance. LANGSTARS CHARMER appears to be the quickest of them all out of the gate; she'll take them as far as she can on the front end. JAFMIL'S INFERNO is clearly the one to beat, though the fact that she's winless at this common distance makes standing alone with her a little dicey (3).
