Social Misfit doing rain dance

Rain, please. That’s what trainer Karl Broberg is hoping for Monday when he runs Social Misfit in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Turf at Louisiana Downs. Broberg entered the horse with an eye on the forecast and would not mind if the heavens opened up and the race at about 1 1/16 miles is moved to the main track.

“It looks like there’s a huge chance of rain, but any time I’m ever in that scenario, the rain gods are not kind to me,” Broberg said Friday.

Broberg said Social Misfit will run regardless since the horse is doing well. Social Misfit has made four starts on the grass, finishing third three times. He is making just his second start for Broberg after being claimed June 9 at Evangeline Downs.

The Louisiana Legends Turf, which drew five others, including Benwill and Well’s Gold, has been moved from Evangeline Downs this year because that track has been unable to use its turf course. It will share a card with the $50,000 Louisiana Legends Starter Turf. Southern Mister will be going for his fourth straight win in that race at about 7 1/2 furlongs. His streak began in a $5,000 claiming race May 20 at Evangeline.

Both races Monday are for 3-year-olds and up bred in Louisiana.

◗ Broberg claimed Social Misfit out of an optional $20,000 claiming dirt route that the horse won. Social Misfit was taken with an eye toward the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Classic.

“That particular division, the older route horses, Louisiana-breds, normally has been dominated by one or two great horses,” Broberg said. “We thought about it, and so many of the good ones are on the shelf, either temporarily or permanently.”

◗ Broberg ran Social Misfit back in the Legends Classic on July 8, and the horse rallied for second, beaten a head by wireto-wire winner Sir Genghis. One start prior, Social Misfit had defeated Sir Genghis.

◗ Social Misfit could get a better pace setup this time courtesy of Trust Factor and Eden Grey’s Kitten. Tim Thornton will be aboard from post 3.

Eden Grey’s Kitten, by Kitten’s Joy Last 3 Beyers: 84-89-82

◗ He is moving back into the statebred ranks after defeating open company in a turf allowance June 10 at Louisiana Downs.

◗ Eden Grey’s Kitten is going for his third straight win. His streak started April 1 in the $60,000 Costa Rising at about 5 1/2 furlongs on turf at Fair Grounds.

◗ Roberto Morales has the mount for trainer Steve Flint.
