How to play the Pick 4

- by Michael Hammersly

Race 6

DUFFINS comes off a decent second to a runaway winner here June 25. That was her first start in almost two months so she can improve. It flatters her that the mare who finished just behind her June 25 came right back to win. QUALITY ASSURANCE has done all of her best work here and she moves from open to restricted company. BELIEVE YOU ME found routing and tougher company too much to handle last time. This is a better situation for her both in terms of class level and distance. (3)

Race 7

BET ON JACK is the one to beat as the veteran comes here in solid form, including a near-miss second (beaten a head) last time out here July 16. FOXY PHILL is a danger, though, as he finished less than a length behind the top pick in that July 16 race. That was a third straight strong outing over this track. VEGAS STRIP was claimed last time out by a trainer having a big meet. The move to dirt may help, too. (3)

Race 8

STATE OF HONOR dueled and paid the price in the Queen’s Plate, fading to eighth. The slightly shorter trip and move to dirt may play better for him, as well as the fact he doesn’t face as much opposing speed. TIZ A SLAM ran on nicely to finish second in the Queen’s Plate. He’s got ability and figures to be coming, though this is his first start on dirt. (2)

Race 9

NEVER WORN comes here in solid form and while he’s winless in four turf starts he has run well on grass (three thirds). He also drops. KNIGHT DIPPER ran on nicely for second here June 29. That was not only his first try on this course, it was his first outing in nearly eight months. MOUSQUETAIRE has looked like a new horse of late since moving to this turf course and further progress makes him dangerous, though this is his first time vs. winners. (3)
