Hoosier Park Pick 5 Analysis

- by Derick Giwner

Race 10 – Haston Memorial

(4) GERRIES SPORT typically has trouble with an Invitational field, but this one seems to have come up light. He has three straight wins when down in class. (7) NEW TALENT rarely finishes worse than second as a regular in this class. If they let him get a breather on the engine, which seems very possible, he could march right down the road. (8) SHOOTERʼS DREAM has quite a bit of class and gets a major driver change to Yannick Gingras on Friday.

Race 11 - $325,000 Dan Patch

Iʼm all-in with this pick five on (4) FREAKY FEET PETE. After getting roughed up in the Ben Franklin at Pocono to start his year following a long layoff, his connections elected to skip both the Haughton and McKee Memorials to aim for this race. He put in a useful effort two starts back and cruised to an easy win last week over this surface. Heʼs ready to roll and if you can get anything close to his 8-1 morning line price Iʼll be very surprised. For those playing the $25,000 guaranteed Superfecta, (1) DEALT A WINNER could be a sneaky play. While he tends to run hot and cold, last week he was stuck in tons of traffic and before that had to deal with bad outside posts. (9) CHECK SIX & (10) WAKIZASHI HANOVER are both very logical players and must be included.

Race 12 – Manley Sturgis

(3) THE GIRLS OF IMAGE has posted a strong 11-5-2-1 record and has a strong closing kick that works well over this surface. (5) CRACKED GLASS has some early speed in a race where that quality seems to be in short supply. She is facing more talented foes but could simply be in the right spot at the right time. (2) ALWAYS GIGGLING comes off a career best mile. Can she repeat that? (8) ROCKIN SERENA got the jump on the top choice and scored last time; threat again. (6) SAND MADELINE was hung for her life last time out and now gets a monster driver change.

Race 13 – Marion Savage

I see this as a fairly wide open race but a few stick out a bit more than others. (10) ALWAYS A FIGHTER battled bravely last time on the drop in class. (5) DABUNKA was also part of the pace last week in the faster of two divisions for this Final. (6) OFFICER JONES did his best from far back after chasing a slow pace in his first start off the claim. Heʼs also adding Gingras this week. Finally, (2) DAN D DUNE lacked a big rally last week but was super in his prior start.

Race 14 – Iron Horse

The track has carded a 12-horse field for this $15,000 guaranteed Hi-5 bet. While the field is bulky, it seems that the prime contenders can be plucked out easily enough. Iʼm going with (10) IF IT RAINS as my top pick despite the second-tier draw. He won at first asking for new connections and has now put together three straight wins. (5) PC SHOCKWAVE also changed hands to a high percentage barn last time but could only finish third while taking plenty of air on the rim. Iʼm expecting more improvement tonight. Others to consider (but not on my ticket) are (2) PANHELLENIC, who is going for three straight wins and (4) FLASHY TRICK, a good second behind the top pick last time.

.50 Ticket: 4,7,8 / 4 / 2,3,5,6,8 / 2,5,6,10 / 5,10 = $60
