BEST BET: RACE 6, BEAUTYOFADAY

FIRST RACE

R CAT DADDY, second in two consecutive starts, nearly overcame a wide trip to miss by a nose in a similar turf sprint July 30; 3-1-1-0 on this turf course. Beaten favorite GRAND JR regularly contends in conditioned claimers on the turf but is 11-1-4-1 this year and seems too often content to settle for minor awards. FRANCESCO FISHING won two in a row on the grass before disappointing when eighth last out after failing to get near the lead; capable of better if able to establish a forward position early.

SECOND RACE

J B QUICK is interesting if one forgives his last two- defeats in which he had excuses. One loss was followed by a layoff, which can be indicative of a physical setback, and the other, his most-recent race, came in the slop; 5 for 18 on fast tracks, compared to 0 for 4 on wet ones. WARREN’S JOE T. finished fourth in a starter allowance over a sloppy track at Gulf July 14 after previously running well on fast dirt tracks at Santa Anita and Parx; might prefer a bit more distance than seven furlongs. EXPRESS JET was on a roll in April and May but has since lost four in a row since winning a race May 14; does at least come off a third in a key race in which the 1-2 finishers came back to win.

THIRD RACE

JOHN’S APPROVAL is speedy and sharp and stands a good chance of repeating in this N2L claimer on the turf after winning an off-the-grass maiden in the slop. TOIKIN figures to be running with him from the start; he won a maiden $12,500 claimer June 18 before a fourth for $16,000 and a third for this $10,000 tag. SUM QUICK CASH is untested in a turf sprint, but starts for a winning barn that is dangerous off the claim and with first-time grass runners.

FOURTH RACE

VALIANT PRINCESS has a right to improve upon her latest when second with a 45 Beyer here July 20 after being away for two months; managed to run faster earlier in the year with a 66 Beyer when fourth in a straight maiden race at Gulf. ADOSINDA has hit the board in three straight maiden claimers since being moved into Florida-bred company; posted a pair of 47 Beyers for runner-up finishes in the slop in races in June and July. RIOMAR didn’t produce last out when sixth but had previously been third in her one race against Florida-bred maiden claimers.

FIFTH RACE

Question marks galore in this five-furlong turf maiden claimer for 2-year-olds .... there are a number of first timers, and of those that have run, only a couple have experience sprinting on the grass. One of those is EROTIC KISS, who dueled for the lead in a similar race July 23 before tiring to be third late. The 31 Beyer she earned wasn’t much, however. FRECKLES KAN faced much better in a straight maiden race on dirt May 18 and ran last of six; in with much easier and shows turf work at Palm Meadows leading up to her return. GUIDONIA is by a top grass sire in Scat Daddy and has a steady worktab of short drills leading up to her debut for a barn that hits at a 15% clip with first-out runners.

SIXTH RACE

BEAUTYOFADAY fell just short of victory when beaten a nose at this class level July 28. Although a filly that rallies from off the pace, she showed the ability to get in position by taking the lead in midstretch last out; plenty of speed to set up her stretch kick. RORAIMA DOS bombed in the slop last out with a distant fourth but had previously won on a fast track in good time; inconsistent but capable when she puts it all together; picks up Gaffalione first off the claim for trainer Kathy Mongeon. STARSHIP REINA is a winner on dirt, but scored that victory in the slop and is far more accustomed to sprinting on the lawn; could regress in a scheduled dirt race going a furlong longer than her best distance.

LOVE FLUTE is winless in 12 races this year, but is in good form off a pair of runner-up finishes and ranks among the fastest of these on figures. GOODBYE SORROW is the most accomplished mare in the race, but looked like claim bait when she ran May 12, and after being taken that day, hasn’t seen action since; tends to run well fresh but still looks like a filly that could regress off her last few races. AWESOMENDENSOME was 2 1/4 lengths behind LOVE FLUTE when third July 16, though her rider did lose his whip; reunited with Zayas, who was up for her last victory two starts ago on June 1.

EIGHTH RACE

EVA LONDON is returned to her best distance of a mile after a solid third-place finish with a wide trip May 27 in Fla-bred stakes company; performers well with time between starts. MAMA JOYCE is sent south after being claimed from a $40,000race June 16 at Belmont in which she ran fourth; 5 for 12 on the dirt, though many of those past dirt starts came in the claiming ranks. PATRIOTIC DIAMOND was outclassed in the Princess Rooney and ran a well-beaten eighth, but had previously been second in a $50,000 stake here in the slop; likely a smidge overbet due to the graded drop.

NINTH RACE

CONTRACTION had a troubled trip when fifth as the favorite July 27 and seems capable of better with a smoother run; picks up Gaffalione and is a horse making his third start of his current form cycle; plenty of back class, too. FOREVER ADMIRAL ran a fine third after a layoff of nearly 16 months on July 16, losing by only 1 1/4 lengths; dangerous if he moves forward off that race, though he starts for a barn winless this year and shows no published works in his PPs since his last start. OSVALDO runs hot and colt but can get a piece if he runs to his potential; fits for this maiden $20,000 tag.
