DEL MAR, Calif. – Danzing Candy has been Mike Smith’s mount this year – when he’s in town.

Smith is traveling to Saratoga to ride in Saturday’s Grade 1 Travers Stakes, leaving the mount on Danzing Candy to Joe Talamo in the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes at seven furlongs at Del Mar.

Talamo knows Danzing Candy well. On May 5, when Smith rode at Churchill Downs, Talamo was aboard Danzing Candy for a win in an optional claimer at a mile at Santa Anita.

“He impressed me a lot,” Talamo said. “I tried to be a good passenger.”

The $200,000 Pat O’Brien Stakes will be the second time Talamo has been aboard Danzing Candy. The winner receives a fees-paid berth for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile here Nov. 3.

“He’s a good miler, but seveneighths is just as good,” Talamo said. “He’s got so much natural speed and he carries it well.”
