How to play the Pick 5

- by Kenny Peck

RACE 8:

CAMILLE'S COMET drops in class and has speed, the rail, and competitive Beyers. PROPER PRINCESS ran well in her only appearance over this track, two back. HIDDEN INTENTIONS had no chance in a paceless route last time, can move way up given a better race flow this afternoon (3).

RACE 9:

OUR INDEPENDENCE comes off a game win at Laurel while sprinting on the turf, and though he's up in class for this he fits well with these based on his figures. M C SQUARED has speed and an inside post; the drop into a claimer off the layoff is a red flag but he certainly has to be respected based on his back Beyers. IMA WILDCAT is another with good early zip; needs a clear lead to run his best race but if he gets that he's awfully tough to catch (3).

RACE 10:

This two-turn maiden claimer is difficult to plot from a pace perspective and it also features a seemingly below-average group, with tenuous favorites and lightly-raced horses with license to improve. Few can be summarily dismissed, making it an easy decision to use them all and hope for a little chaos (8).

RACE 11:

Standing alone with CELEBRITY WARRIOR despite his inexperience going this extended distance, as he has a solid late kick and should appreciate an extra five sixteenths of a mile or so. He figures to get pace help, as there is no shortage of speed, and he should be rolling late if he's able to run to his recent turf figures (1).

RACE 12:

ALY'S ICE BOX hasn't run to her best races thus far this year but she does have back figures which fit well with these, and one of her best career Beyers did come over this course. The one to beat is EMPTY HOUSE, who is way down in price and the most likely winner as she ships over from New York and has the best Beyers in the field (2). THE PLAY: 1,3, 7 / 1, 2, 5 / ALL / 7 / 5, 9 = 144 Combinations ($72 Ticket)
