How to play the Pick 4

- by Kenny Peck

RACE 8:

DISCREET LOVER ran into Gunrunner in his last two and he was against the race flow in his prior pair; has the potential to move way up today. PAGE MCKENNEY, a 19-time winner, steps up in class off that latest victory but he can almost never be counted out. JUST CALL KENNY impressed in that Iselin score last time out, and if he can run to that race he'll be tough to beat here (3).

RACE 9:

PETROV and COAL FRONT form a potent entry, with the former coming off a careerbest Beyer and the latter losing for the first time when sent seven furlongs against a very tough group in his latest. AMERICAN PASTIME merits a long look based on his best figures, and he looms the main threat to the entry (2).

RACE 10:

IT TIZ WELL could be the main speed in the Cotillion, and if she's able to shake loose and control the pace she figures tough to reel in. But SALTY and ABEL TASMAN will be rolling late, and either is capable with a clean trip and the right set up. The former was behind the latter in their last two meetings but the Acorn was too short for SALTY and ABEL TASMAN benefited from an early move from Mike Smith in the Coaching Club American Oaks (3).

RACE 11:

WATCH ME WHIP has steadily improved in his route tries and could be coming up to a big race for trainer Dale Romans, if the last couple of works are any indication. WEST COAST is the horse to beat in this Pennsylvania Derby after that Travers score in his latest, even if he is a "bounce" candidate off the easy trip he had there. IRAP ran deceptively well for the show in the Travers, as he spotted position to the winner and was forced to move prematurely. Not ready to give up on IRISH WAR CRY, who was against the race flow in each of his last three starts (4). THE PLAY: 1,8, 9 / 1, 5 / 5, 9, 10 / 3,4, 5, 8 = 72 Combinations ($36 Ticket)
