DRF Tournaments contest offers free trip to Australia

- PETER T. FORNATALE

An exciting new international event is coming to DRF Tournaments. And the best news of all is that it’s free to play.

Daily Racing Form and Sky Racing have announced a partnership for The Everest Tournament, a free contest scheduled to take place at 10 p.m. Eastern on Friday night, Oct. 13, consisting of races from The Everest card from Royal Randwick in Sydney, Australia. The Everest itself is the world’s richest turf race with a purse of $10 million Australian that will be the contest’s anchor leg.

The winner of the online contest, which takes place exclusively at DRF Tournaments, will receive a free trip to Australia for Day 1 of The Championships at Randwick on Saturday, April 7, 2018. The prize package includes airfare, ground transportation, and a three-night hotel stay in downtown Sydney for the winner and a guest. The total prize value is more than $6,000.

“We’re very excited to work with Sky Racing to be offering this fabulous prize,” said Robert Forbeck, DRF’s senior vice president and national advertising director. “This is a new international frontier that we’re eager to explore further in the future, and a chance to make a horseplayer’s dream come true.”

The contest is free, so it’s worth playing, even if you just play your phone number or use all the No. 1’s. But players interested in learning something about Australian form will be wise to tune in to a special online handicapping session scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 12. Australian racing pundit Jason Witham is expected to be on the panel and will help guide viewers through the contest races in detail. Information on how to register for the handicapping session will be available soon at DRF.com.

SoCal qualifiers

Santa Anita has a reputation as the market leader in live-bankroll contests. Players looking to see why should play in Saturday’s last-chance qualifier for Santa Anita’s Autumn Championship, a pair of livebank events that will take place Oct. 7-8 at the track. Saturday’s qualifier costs $230 to play, and 1 in 26 entries will win packages worth more than $5,000, including entries to both tournaments and a two-night hotel stay near the track.

DRFT also has just begun running qualifiers for the Del Mar Fall Challenge, a two-day live-bank contest scheduled to take place on track the week after the Breeders’ Cup, Nov. 11-12. The first direct qualifier is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 8, but players can win their way to that through a Round 1 event Saturday. The Round 1 costs $95 and 1 in 7 entries will win their $580 entry to the Del Mar qualifier, with 1 in 10 advancing from that event to the big contest at Del Mar.
