ARCADIA, Calif. – Shippers from Canada, Europe, and the East Coast are among the probable starters for the two $100,000 one-mile turf stakes here on Monday.

They are joined by a solid group of locally based runners in the Zuma Beach Stakes for 2-yearolds and the Surfer Girl Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. The stakes could produce starters for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and the Juvenile Fillies Turf, both at a mile, at Del Mar on Nov. 3.

The field for the Zuma Beach Stakes includes Count Alexander, who was fourth in the Grade 2 Summer Stakes at Woodbine on Sept. 17 and is now trained by Vladimir Cerin; Mantracker, a maiden race winner in Ireland in August who is trained by Phil D’Amato; and Trusting Friend, who was fourth in the Laurel Futurity in Maryland on Sept. 16 and has since joined trainer Doug O’Neill.

The field includes My Boy Jack and Kazan, who were second and third in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf on Sept. 3.

There are three European shippers among the candidates for the Surfer Girl Stakes – Deep Breath from Ireland, Fatale Bere from France, and Miss Puddles from England.

Deep Breath, now trained by Eoin Harty, has won 2 of 3 starts. Fatale Bere, who recently joined trainer Leonard Powell, also won 2 of 3 starts, and was third in a minor stakes at Craon, France, on Sept. 2.

Miss Puddles, trained by O’Neill, has not raced since winning a novice race at Chester, England, in late July and has been in steady training in California in the last month.

The local fillies are led by One Fast Broad and Multiplayer, who were second and third to Terra’s Angel in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sept. 4.

Terra’s Angel heads to Texas

Terra’s Angel, who won the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sept. 4, has been sent to Texas for the remainder of the fall, trainer Dallas Keen said.

Terra’s Angel will be based at Retama Park with co-owner Terry Eoff, who trained Terra’s Angel for a maiden win in her debut at Lone Star Park in May.

In three starts with Keen in California, Terra’s Angel started twice at Del Mar, with a third in the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes on dirt Aug. 12, and a 19-1 upset win in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf. She finished sixth, beaten 48 lengths by Moonshine Memories, in the Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita on Sept. 30.

Terra’s Angel will be considered for the $75,000 La Senorita Stakes at a mile on turf Oct. 14. Keen said she could return to his California stable in coming months.

Eoff owns Terra’s Angel with Johnny Evans. By Drosselmeyer, Terra’s Angel has won 2 of 4 starts and earned $96,765.

Del Mar pick six info

Del Mar will offer a jackpot pick six for most of its autumn meeting, but will offer a standard pick six during Breeders’ Cup weekend.

The meeting opens with a fiveday racing week on Wednesday, Nov. 1. On Wednesday and Thursday, the pick six will pay out 15 percent of the net pool in the event of a single winning ticket. If no one hits the pick six or there is more than one winning ticket, that 15 percent will carry over to Thursday. If the jackpot is not paid out that Thursday, it will carry over to Friday, Nov. 10 – the first day of racing after Breeders’ Cup weekend.

For the two days of Breeders’ Cup (Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4 ) and Sunday, Nov. 5, Del Mar will offer a standard pick six, with 85 percent of the net pool paid to tickets with six winners, or carried over to the next day if no one has a winning ticket. There will be a mandatory payout of the pick six on that Sunday.

Del Mar used the jackpot format for its pick six at its autumn 2016 meeting and its summer meeting this year.

Roman wins four races

After a quiet opening week of the Santa Anita autumn meeting, apprentice jockey Evin Roman had a breakthrough day Thursday, recording four wins on a single program for the third time this year.

Roman won Thursday’s first race with South Americain ($44), the fourth with Getoffmyback ($65.80), the fifth with Wonderful Lie ($7.80), and the eighth with Reverend Al ($8.40).

The four-win day moved Roman into first in the standings with five wins, one more than Drayden Van Dyke and Flavien Prat. Roman had one win from 17 mounts from Sept. 29 through Oct. 1, the first three days of the season.

The 19-year-old Roman, who had his first win in January in Puerto Rico, has been a star apprentice this year, tying with Prat for the riding title at the Santa Anita spring-summer meeting and winning titles at the Los Alamitos meetings in July and September.

Jockeys have won four races on a program nine times this year in Southern California. Prat has done it four times, most recently on Sept. 30, and Rafael Bejarano and Brayan Pena have each done it once.
