Sadler’s Joy works half-mile

- By David Grening

ELMONT, N.Y. – The retired Twilight Eclipse won’t be making a fifth consecutive appearance in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, but his former trainer Tom Albertrani will be back in the $4 million race Nov. 4 at Del Mar.

Albertrani will making his fifth straight and sixth overall appearance in the Turf, this time with Sadler’s Joy, who Monday worked a half-mile in 49.72 seconds over the Belmont Park main track. It was the first work for Sadler’s Joy since his fourth-place finish as the favorite in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic on Sept. 30.

Monday’s work, which included a final quarter of 24.63 with a steady gallop-out all the way around the turn, was an indication that not only has Sadler’s Joy come out of his last race in good order but he’s held up well to a seven-race campaign that began in January.

“He’s been coming out of his races in really good shape every time,” Albertrani said. “Today we saw it, that was a really good work. He’s definitely still on his game; just keep him like that for another couple of weeks.”

Sadler’s Joy, a 4-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy, is 2 for 7 this year with both wins coming at 1 1/2 miles, the distance of the BC Turf, including the Grade 1 Sword Dancer on Aug. 26 at Saratoga. In the Hirsch, Sadler’s Joy was sent off the lukewarm

7-2 favorite, but could manage only a fourth-place finish, six lengths behind Beach Patrol.

Sadler’s Joy was last of 11 early, 18 lengths off the pace. Sadler’s Joy is a late-running sort, but even that was too much ground to make up, especially over a course, though listed firm, that had some give in it as rain had fallen earlier in the day.

“You don’t want to try and take him out of his running style, but I would just like to be a little closer in his next start,” said Albertrani, who will retain jockey Julien Leparoux for the Breeders’ Cup. “We know he’s got that kick. Certainly, we know pace makes the race, but I’d think in an ideal world you’d like to be a little closer.

“Julien did say that he probably didn’t prefer that ground that day. That could have been another piece of the equation."

In the BC Turf, Albertrani finished third with Twilight Eclipse in 2014 and third with Brilliant Speed in 2011.

Toner turf horses point to stakes

Time and Motion and Hunter O’Riley were back on the work tab Sunday at Belmont Park for trainer Jimmy Toner, with both preparing for fall stakes.

Time and Motion, winless in four starts this year, worked five furlongs in 1:01.34 over Belmont Park’s turf course. She is being pointed to the Grade 3, $200,000 Athenia on Oct. 28 at Belmont. Time and Motion is coming out of a fourth-place finish behind Off Limits in the Grade 3 Noble Damsel. Toner said he would have liked to have seen Time and Motion taken farther back off the pace that day than she was by jockey Jose Lezcano. Motion Toner fares said in how the Time Atheniaand could determine her future. “Hopefully, she runs well enough and we can keep her going,” Toner said. Meanwhile, Hunter O’Riley worked a half-mile in 50.54 seconds Sunday. It was his first work in a month. Toner explained that Hunter O’Riley, winner of the Grade 2 Bowling Green and fourth in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga, was bothered by a quarter crack that kept him from running in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch. Hunter O’Riley is now pointing to the Grade 3, $200,000 Red Smith on Nov. 11 at Aqueduct.

Services for John Cosentino

There will be a memorial service for John Cosentino, a lifelong racetracker who died Oct. 6, on Monday at the Krauss Funeral Home, 1097 Hempstead Turnpike, Franklin Square, N.Y. The service will take place from 6-9 p.m.

Cosentino worked on the New York Racing Association circuit as a pony boy, outrider, trainer and, most recently, as an employee of Sallee Vans, a horse transport company.

Capla Temptress works for Mott

Capla Temptress, the winner of the Grade 1 Natalma on Sept. 17, worked five furlongs in 1:01.82 over the Belmont turf course Sunday in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 3 at Del Mar.

In her work, her second since being transferred to Bill Mott from Marco Botti, Capla Temptress started two lengths behind Lemoona, a maiden 2-year-old filly, and finished one length back at the wire.

“She’s been just a steady worker – that’s pretty much the information we received from Marco, who had her,” Mott said. “He said she won’t wow you in the mornings. She picked her [workmate] up, ran up to her, and that was about it. But from what [Botti] told us, that’s kind of what we expected.”

Mott said Yoshida, the winner of the Grade 2 Hill Prince, would not be pointed to the BC Mile. Mott said Yoshida could be pointed to the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar on Nov. 25 to remain with 3-year-olds or be put away for next year.

Mott also said no decision has been made on Ballagh Rocks, third in the Shadwell Turf Mile, regarding the BC Mile.

Elate, meanwhile, Mott’s other confirmed Breeders’ Cup starter, worked a half-mile in 49 seconds on Friday at Saratoga and will have another breeze this Friday at Saratoga before shipping to Southern California on Oct. 26.
