She’s No Drama’s figure stands out

- By Chuck Dybdal

Friday’s $50,000-added Golden Gate Debutante at Golden Gate Fields brings together the leaders of the Northern California juvenile filly division as well as some solid Southern California contenders.

She’s No Drama might be favored in the six-furlong Tapeta race off her solid 81 Beyer Speed Figure going 5 1/2 furlongs in an optional claimer Oct. 29 at Golden Gate.

The race came following a runner-up effort to Friday opponent Blessed Lady on Sept. 9 and seven weeks of training. Trainer Jeff Bonde said the light went on between races for She’s No Drama.

“We put in some hard work,” said Bonde, who owns the Big Drama filly with Jerome Russell. “She’s learning.” Northern California debut winners – and workmates – Arwan and Aniva Bay may be the ones She’s No Drama has to beat.

Aniva Bay, who like She’s No Drama was bought for $130,000 in spring at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. auction, won on the dirt Oct. 6 at Fresno. She wore down Majestic Tica in that 5 1/2-furlong race and won by a half-length. It was 10 lengths back to third.

Trainer Blaine Wright said Aniva Bay was getting too sharp from working with Arwan at Golden Gate, so he decided to run her.

“She had been working with [Arwan] and started wanting to work too fast, so we entered her in Fresno, and, luckily, she gutted it out,” Wright said.

“We were happy she sat off the pace and closed and that she shipped well.”

As for Arwan, she stayed home at Golden Gate for her debut and closed from fifth in a field of 10 to win by a neck going six furlongs.

Blessed Lady rallied to win her first two starts, a maiden race on the dirt at Santa Rosa and the optional claimer over She’s No Drama. She surprisingly grabbed the lead routing in the Pike Place Dancer on the turf at Golden Gate in her third and most recent start and faded to finish fifth.

“Everybody took back, and I don’t think she was all that comfortable on the lead, but she’s doing good now,” trainer Steve Specht said.

Amba won her debut, then finished second, 6 1/2 lengths back, in She’s No Drama’s Oct. 29 win.

The Southern California invaders are Miss Puddles, who has made all three of her starts on turf; Klosters, who comes off three turf routes; Steph Being Steph, second last out in the Anoakia Stakes at Santa Anita; and Street with no name, who won sprinting at Del Mar in a maiden $80,000 claimer.
