Tricks to Doo gives sire Into Mischief a Beyer boost

- By Joe Nevills

Tricks to Doo’s dominant score Saturday in the Inaugural Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs earned an 89 Beyer Speed Figure, helping grow Into Mischief’s lead as the most prolific sire of juvenile runners with Beyers of 80 or higher in 2017.

Into Mischief has had nine 2-year-olds meet or exceed the 80 speed figure threshold this year on 15 different occasions, according to the Daily Racing Form’s exclusive Beyer Sire Performance Standings. He leads all sires in that criteria by both frequency and diversity.

Tricks to Doo was one of his sire’s biggest contributors in this category. In addition to his 7 1/4-length Inaugural Stakes victory, the colt earned an 81 when third on debut at Keeneland in October, then picked up an 82 during his 5 3/4-length maiden score at Laurel Park later that month.

Into Mischief’s highest juvenile speed figure came from Mia Mischief, who earned a 90 in a front-running optional claiming win in November at Churchill Downs. It was her latest of three 80-plus Beyers after earning an 82 on debut in September at Churchill, then picking up an 85 from a 16 1/4-length maiden win in October at Keeneland.

In stakes competition, Into Mischief’s youngsters were also led by Engage, who earned an 86 Beyer in his Grade 3 Futurity Stakes win in October at Belmont Park. Aveenu Malcainu generated an 82 in the Funny Cide Stakes in August at Saratoga, while Tiz Mischief picked up an 81 when second by a head in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in November at Churchill.

Into Mischief stands at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $100,000.

Curlin ranked second by the number of 80-plus Beyers earned by his juveniles with 10, from five different runners. He also leads all sires by number of juvenile races that earned a 90 speed figure or above, with four.

Likely Eclipse Award contender Good Magic accounted for three of those figures, most notably earning a 100 Beyer when winning his maiden in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Solomini has never earned less than an 84 speed figure in four career starts, and three have exceeded the 90 threshold. He earned a 90 when second in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes in September at Santa Anita, then was given a 93 when second to Good Magic in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The colt was finally given a 92 for his effort in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity, in which he crossed the finish first, but was disqualified to third.

Curlin stands at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Lexington, Ky., for $150,000.

More Than Ready leads category

More Than Ready has developed into a sire capable of getting a diverse spectrum of high-level runners among distances, surfaces, and hemispheres.

The stallion’s roots, however, are in dirt sprints. He saw his greatest success on the racetrack around one turn, highlighted by a win in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes, and the distance and surface remain strong points at stud.

As seen in the Daily Racing Form’s Beyer Sire Performance Standings, More Than Ready leads all sires by the number of Beyer Speed Figures of 100 or more earned by his runners in dirt sprints during the 2017 racing calendar. He has had three runners hit the mark a combined six times, both the most this year.

Leading the way is probable Eclipse Award contender Roy H, who earned three-digit Beyers on four occasions in 2017. He rung up a 111 Beyer on two occasions: first by winning the Grade 2 True North Stakes in June at Belmont Park, then in a one-length score in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar. He also earned two 106 figures in a May optional-claiming score at Santa Anita, then in October in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes.

Tom’s Ready notched a 107 Beyer after winning the Grade 3 Bold Ruler Handicap at Belmont, while Rectify picked up a 103 in an optional-claiming win in March at Aqueduct.

More Than Ready stands at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky., for an advertised fee of $75,000.

Three stallions were tied for the second-most 100-plus Beyer races in sprints by their foals this year, with five. That trio was Munnings of Ashford Stud in Kentucky, Imperialism of Esquirol Farms in Alberta, and Florida stallion City Place of Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds.
