Bolt d’Oro Medaglia d’Oro–Globe Trot, by A.P. Indy

Multiple Grade 1 winner Bolt d’Oro helped power a career year for sire Medaglia d’Oro and this spring will look to give his sire another career accomplishment, as the elite stallion is still hunting for his first Kentucky Derby win.

Medaglia d’Oro led all stallions in North America with seven different Grade 1 winners in 2017, including a pair of Breeders’ Cup winners, with five of those becoming Eclipse Award finalists. The son of El Prado joined Danzig, Mr. Prospector, and Storm Cat as the only American stallions to sire seven Grade 1 winners in a calendar year.

While those Grade 1 winners ran the gamut from juveniles to older horses and scored on both dirt and turf thanks to the versatile sireline, the prevailing trend was stamina. With the exception of the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint victory by Bar of Gold, all of Medaglia d’Oro’s Grade 1 winners in 2017 succeeded at route distances – and even Bar of Gold was a stakes winner at 1 1/16 miles earlier in her campaign. Bolt d’Oro scored his initial Grade 1 victory in the Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs, then stretched out to 1 1/16 miles for his FrontRunner romp.

Medaglia d’Oro is already a classic sire thanks to his Hall of Fame daughter Rachel Alexandra, who won the Preakness Stakes, Haskell Invitational, and Woodward Stakes against males in a Horse of the Year campaign that also included a win in the Kentucky Oaks. Medaglia d’Oro also is the sire of twotime Eclipse Award winner Songbird and a second Kentucky Oaks winner in Plum Pretty.

Globe Trot, by stamina influence A.P. Indy, won at up to a mile, and her first two runners are both stakes winners. Bolt d’Oro’s half-brother Sonic Mule won the Mucho Macho Man Stakes going a mile last year at Gulfstream Park and has placed in multiple graded sprint stakes.

Globe Trot is out of Trip, a multiple Grade 3 winner at 1 1/16 miles. The female family is slanted toward speed, as Trip’s next three dams – Tour, Fun Flight, and Fun and Tears – were all stakes-winning sprinters. Trip, a half-sister to the dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Zensational, produced the stakes-winning juvenile Passport as well as the dam of successful sprinter Recruiting Ready.
