Big-contest qualifiers abound

- PETER T. FORNATALE

Saturday’s featured game on DRF Tournaments is a $580 Grade 1 qualifier for the World Championship of Handicapping. Players can buy in or feed in and one in 10 will win their $5,000 seats to DRF’s bigmoney contest with no rake in the finals. The WCH takes place online and is expected to have a purse of $1 million based on full participation of 200 entries.

Saturday will also feature a Round 1 contest for the Belmont Stakes Challenge. For that one, players put up $95 and one in five will receive a $410 entry to the April 8 one-day Belmont qualifier.

On Sunday, Monmouth’s qualifier for its June 2 Monmouth Pick Your Prize event takes center stage. Entries cost $126 and one in 23 will win their $2,000 Monmouth entries plus $500 in travel.

Be on the lookout for special Keeneland qualifiers on DRFT this weekend as well. These events, which cost $350 and are limited to 10 entries, have proven very popular over the last few weekends. Keeneland’s Grade 1 Gamble is scheduled for Sunday, April 15.

In live contest play this weekend, Santa Anita hosts a $500 buy-in contest where all the entry fees will be paid out as prizes. Players use $300 as a live bankroll and must wager that whole amount on the Santa Anita card in the win, place, show, exacta, trifecta, and double pools. This will be the first opportunity for players to win seats to the upcoming World Horseplayer Tour/Santa Anita Preakness Challenge at a live event. Three WHT/SA will be in the prize pool, as well as seats to the National Horseplayers Championship, with cash awards rounding it out.

Speaking of the WHT/SA Preakness contest, the only place to qualify online is DRF Tournaments. Look for feeder opportunities every operating day, which will feed into the next qualifier on Saturday, April 7. Most of the feeders cost $54 and one in 10 will advance to the qualifier, but also be on the lookout for special $135 qualifiers that will send one in four entries forward.
