Debut winner Tiptoe may offer value

- By Randy Goulding

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The 35 Beyer Speed Figure that Tiptoe received for winning a maiden special weight race in her debut isn’t going to get anyone too excited. However, the manner in which she won the six-furlong race suggests she has a bright future. With the low Beyer, she could be a decent price in a first-level allowance race that serves as Saturday’s feature at Hastings.

The 6 1/2-furlong dash for 3-year-old fillies drew six horses and goes as race 3 on a seven-race card that begins at 1:50 p.m. Pacific.

In her debut, Tiptoe broke okay from the inside post but then was on heels going into the first turn. With Amadeo Perez aboard, she had to steady sharply when she tried to get through along the rail and then was locked and loaded with nowhere to go around the second turn. When she straightened out in the stretch, she moved outside and finished full of run to win impressively.

“The time was slow, and I’m not sure if she beat much, “said trainer Dino Condilenios. “But I’ve always been high on her, and she overcame a lot to win her first race.”

Tiptoe showed she can rate, and there should be a fast pace to work with Saturday. She will break from post 5 under Perez.

KEY CONTENDERS

Tiptoe, by Tiz Wonderful Beyer: 35

◗ She has a right to improve with a race behind her, and she came back with a sharp half-mile work in 48.80 seconds May 12.

◗ As a half-sister to threetime stakes winner Architecture, also trained by Condilenios, she has the pedigree to be a decent horse.

Acharnement, by Into Mischief Last 3 Beyers: 29-64-60

◗ The likely favorite, she will appreciate the class relief after getting fried in a duel with the undefeated Here’s Hannah in the $50,000 Ross McLeod in her first start here May 6.

◗ Trained by Phil Hall, she carried her substantial speed around two turns in a one-mile maiden special weight race on turf at Turf Paradise and almost took them all the way in a first-level allowance race going six furlongs on the main track there.

◗ She drew the rail and could be gone if she breaks on top with Enrique Gonzalez picking up the mount from Perez.

Under Par, by Stephanotis Beyers: 44-62

◗ She showed good speed in winning her 2-year-old debut going 3 1/2 furlongs and then set the pace before settling for second in the B.C. Cup Debutante in her only subsequent start.

◗ She is trained by Mark Cloutier, who over the past five years has a 28 percent strike rate and $2.42 return on investment with horses coming back from a layoff of 180 days or longer.
