How to play the Pick 5

- by Kenny Peck

RACE 9:

PROFORMA returns from the layoff but this barn wins at a solid 19% with horses off extended layoffs. LEWISFIELD was no match for the resurgent Switzerland in his latest but he ran well in defeat. He was a length in front of IT'S THE JOURNEY two back, and that rival does have consistent figures. SKYLER'S SCRAMJET and DELTA BLUESMAN are two of the main speeds in the Mr. Prospector (5).

RACE 10:

IRISH STRAIT is very obviously going to be tough in the Dan Horn, as he has a huge edge in Beyers, coming off solid races against open company in his last few. He was very game in defeat in the Cliff Hanger last time and he figures to win this if he even approaches his best recent figures (1).

RACE 11:

It's not easy to feel comfortable playing the Pegasus with even a handful of runners, with stretch-outs, shippers and lightly-raced runners making it tough to plot race flow and expected performances. For that reason I'll use all eight and hope for something a little unexpected (8).

RACE 12:

DEREK'S SMILE was off the board in his return but that was on the main track, and he's clearly better on the turf at this stage of the game. VISIONARY RULER is winless on the green but his last appearance on this surface was solid, as he weakened only late after facing race-long pressure on the lead (2).

RACE 13:

SASSY SILK has some upside, as he had legit excuses in his last two, including an inside trip on a dead rail two back. FIND THE MONEY drops for top trainer Jorge Navarro, and that of course is an angle that produces a high percentage of winners. BANK ELABORATION looms the main speed, and could in fact shake loose early on (3).

THE PLAY: 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 / 4 / ALL / 7, 8 / 1, 5, 8 = 240 Combinations ($120 Ticket)
