BEST BET: RACE 1, CLASSY ATLANTIC FIRST RACE

CLASSY ATLANTIC could shake loose in this turf sprint for 3-year-old claiming fillies, on a course recently kind to speed. ‘ATLANTIC drops and shortens from a N1X route that already produced two next-out winners. In a race void of speed, CLASSY ATLANTIC can make the front and be gone. AN EDDIE SURPRISE is a horse for course on this layout; six starts on the hill produced two wins and four seconds. She won a starter allowance against older two back; she missed by only a neck last out in a starter allowance for 3yo fillies. The only two-time turf winner and arguably the “class” of the field, ‘SURPRISE will rally late. MONGOLIAN WINDOW drops and shortens up, returning to the course on which she scored her maiden win two starts back. That come-from-behind victory makes her a logical threat in this spot.

SECOND RACE

STUDLY PERFECTION was chewed up pressing a blazing pace last out in a starter allowance sprint; he finished seventh. Now he drops to N2L claiming and stretches to two turns as the controlling speed. His runner-up finish two starts back in a claiming race for 3yos would be good enough. Come and catch him. MOONMAN bobbled and misfired last out, but his route races in spring give him a look. This is his second start off the claim, he gets in light with the seven-pound apprentice rider and looms a serious threat from off the pace. KALEIDOSCOPE KID is the field’s only two-time winner (N2L condition this race does not apply to 3yos). The late-runner is in from Golden Gate where he blitzed low-level claiming 3yos last out, he also will rally late.

THIRD RACE

Fast-working 2yo filly COURTEOUS is training she she means business. She posted back-toback bullet works on this track; her dam’s only other runner won first time out. The daughter of Midnight Lute will be tough to beat if she runs like she works. This is trainer Richard Mandella’s first 2yo starter of the season. BIZWHACKS appears to have worked fast at San Luis Rey Downs; trainer Doug O’Neill already won six races for 2yos this meet including four that won first out. TRUE VALIDITY debuts with a solid workout pattern for Simon Callaghan. The filly was purchased for $270k in April, from the same 2yo sale that produced $200k purchase BIZWHACKS. SHE ROCKS THE LOOK makes her career debut for Peter Miller.

FOURTH RACE

In the money all four starts in sprints, TENGS RHYTHM stretches to a mile against a dubious cast of maiden-30 fillies. Her even-paced style suggests two turns is within reach; she finished more than five clear of third last time out. STILL A FUNNY GIRL showed very little in her career debut at 65-1, but everything changes here. She moves from turf to dirt, MSW to maiden-claiming, and adds Lasix. Her ability is uncertain, but she is likely to start at a big price and other than the top choice, this field came up soft. BAD AND BOUGIE drops and moves to dirt after setting the pace and fading in a state-bred maiden-claiming turf route; POWER BOOKED goes long after virutally splitting the field in her career debut (sixth of 10).

FIFTH RACE

HIT THE SEAM is back with maidens after a creditable fourth-place finish in a Calbred stakes race. Running long for the first time, he pressed the pace, hung tough until deep stretch and then faltered. That was a mile and one-eighth; he shortens to a mile and returns to his proper MSW level. This could be graduation day for the eight-start maiden. CLYDE’S PRIDE will vie for favoritism following successive runner-up finishes in similar Cal-bred MSW turf routes. The outside post is a

challenge, but he is quick enough early to establish position before getting hung wide. GOLD N

BOLD improved a bunch second time out, third vs. similar. The lightly raced 4yo is headed the right direction.

SIXTH RACE

Runner-up both recent starts at this $16k claiming N3L class level, PARTY HOSTESS is the logical choice. His most-recent runner-up effort was validated when the third-place finisher came back to win for $10k, and the fifth-place finisher returned to win for $5k. PRINCESS LEIA scored a decisive N2L win last out in her first start since moving to stable of trainer Rafael Becerra. That race was around two turns; the filly she beat returned to win. JUST BE HELD wired slightly softer; she is a front-end threat moving up one level in class. TEE EM EYE goes route to sprint and will fly late.

SEVENTH RACE

AMBOSELI ran well in her comeback three weeks ago, and should be a fitter mare second start back. Off eight months, she made a middle move to join the leading flight into the far turn, angled outside for a path at the head of the lane, and then flattened out. Good, solid fourth-place comeback. She shortens to a mile; her races last fall are fast enough for this N2X. ACHIRA wired N1X foes last out, although she could have been disqualified for interfering with the runner-up. ACHIRA could be loose on the lead as she moves up a notch in class. The filly she finished in front of last time returned Saturday to win a N1X. Win or lose, ACHIRA looks like the to catch. CHEEKABOO finished a respectable third in her comeback last month, which was her first start in a year. Second start back, she will rallly late.

EIGHTH RACE

TRUE TESTAMENT drops from maiden-75 to the maiden-20 bottom level for the first time. The speedy 12-start maiden finished second in three of four starts on dirt and is likely to be heavily favored on the mega-drop. NAUGHTY SOPHIE finished fourth as the favorite, but she actually ran well. She was squeezed and lost position at the break when several outside runners veered inward, ‘SOPHIE zoomed forward to third position, chased and faded. Better than looked. TAPALITA drops again, with enough speed to keep the top choice in her sights. PURDUE is on the improve, while IRISH CREAM N KAFE is gradually improving.
