BEST BET: RACE 6, REGULATE

FIRST RACE

Del Mar opening day, first post 2 p.m. OUT OF PATIENCE is a 13-for-53 pro claimed last out by one of his previous trainers, Kristin Mulhall. The gelding is 3-for-4 for Mulhall; he won last summer at Del Mar. His best races are fast enough and he has a pressing style that usually leads to a good trip. POPULAR KID will roll late. His closing rally last out (from sixth to second) was very good. The winner led gate to wire; ‘KID was the only late-runner to make up significant ground. He was claimed by Doug O’Neill, who is 9-for-24 first-off-the-claim since last fall. CARVILLE wired a $12.5k claiming route last out at Golden Gate; three behind him returned to win their next start. From the inside post, he might be the one to catch. PREACHER ROE likes this racetrack and adds speed. Tough outside post, however.

SECOND RACE

AYACARA drops into a claiming race for the first time, while making his first start since he was gelded. Trainer Keith Desormeaux is 3-for-5 firsttime-tag since early this year. SO LONG SAILOR also drops for the first time into a claiming race. His ability to stay two turns is uncertain, but his downhill maiden win two back puts him in the picture in this mile turf race. JIMMY CHILA stretches out and drops in class, while horse-forcourse KYLEMORE is the only starter with a win over the Del Mar course.

THIRD RACE

EIGHTY THREE scored a sharp win last out at this $20k claiming sprint level with a stalking trip that he figures to get again. Front-runner KETOS is likely to set the pace. He was claimed from a fast-pace runner-up effort last out by trainer David Jacobson, now based full time in Southern California. KETOS and last-out starter allowance winner JUNIOR GILLIAM are Jacobson’s first career starters at Del Mar. ‘GILLIAM will rally late. BURN ME TWICE won twice here last summer, he could get a good trip positioned behind the top choice. PAPA TURF rarely wins, but he scored at this level for these connections last fall.

FOURTH RACE

Debut runner-up FLYING TO THE LINE and debut third DICHOTOMY are tough to separate in this MSW for Cal-bred 2yo fillies. FLYING TO THE LINE pressed the pace inside, dropped back to fourth on the turn, re-rallied three-wide into the lane and gave the even-money favorite all she could handle. Good effort by the daughter of firstcrop sire Boisterous. DICHOTOMY covered more ground than the top choice. She was not quick early, raced four-wide through the turn, five-wide into the lane and went one-paced late. She finished only a length and a quarter behind the top choice. First-time starter SQUARE PEGGY, $160k purchase at Barretts in April, has shown speed in morning works. ATHLEISURE debuts with a solid work pattern for a winning trainer-jockey combo. Mike Machowsky and Rafael Bejarano are 3-for-4 with 2yo firsters. Second-time starter ZO LO’S LOV can improve with a race under belt. Her odds will be high. Also-eligible OPUS WON appears to have trained well at San Luis Rey.

FIFTH RACE

RITZY A. P., whose most recent win was on the Del Mar grass course last fall, gets the call in a competitive N2X turf route. He actually ran a winning race last out at this level, runner-up after making the lead in deep stretch. He is reunited with the last rider he won for. ARMS RUNNER will vie for favoritism as he drops in class following a good fourth vs. N3X rivals. His figures suggest he is a better horse since a nightmare trip here last summer in the Oceanside Stakes. ECKERSLEY makes his first
