Paradise Woods sidelined

- By Steve Andersen

DEL MAR, Calif. – Paradise Woods, winless in three starts this year after winning two Grade 1 races in 2017, will be turned out “for a couple of months” to recover from bone bruising detected in a scan on Friday, trainer Richard Mandella said.

A 4-year-old, Paradise Woods will resume training with Mandella later this year.

“There is the thought of bringing her back next year,” Mandella said.

Last week, Paradise Woods was taken to the Alamo Pintado Equine Clinic in central California, where she underwent evaluation, Mandella said. The tests were taken after Paradise Woods finished sixth as the 2-1 favorite in the Osunitas Stakes at Del Mar on July 20 in her turf debut.

Last year, Paradise Woods won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks and Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes, both at Santa Anita, before finishing third in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Del Mar.

My Boy Jack out for year

My Boy Jack, a three-time stakes winner who was fifth in the Kentucky Derby in May, has been diagnosed with a bone chip in an ankle that will require surgery.

My Boy Jack will miss the remainder of the year. Kirk Godby of Don’t Tell My Wife Stables, which owns the colt with Monomoy Stables, said My Boy Jack is expected to return to racing as a 4-year-old in 2019. The injury was detected after My Boy Jack finished eighth of nine in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby on July 7.

“The vet said it was interfering with his performance and said it was very minor,” Godby said. “The vet said he’ll clean up well and come back 100 percent.”

Trained by Keith Desormeaux, My Boy Jack has won 3 of 12 starts and earned $729,145. By Creative Cause, My Boy Jack won the Zuma Beach Stakes for 2-year-olds on turf last October in his fourth start and two Grade 3 races this year – the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park in February and the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland in April.

In the Kentucky Derby on May 5, My Boy Jack closed from 19th in a field of 20 to finish seven lengths behind Justify. My Boy Jack raced in traffic with three-eighths of a mile remaining and rallied wide.

“He had trouble on the turn and had to kick out and reengage,” Godby said. “He’s such a great horse. He’s going to be fine. Giving him three months off will do well for him anyway.

“We look forward to bringing him back in 2019.”

Frey sprains knee

Jockey Kyle Frey will miss the first half of August after spraining his knee when he was unseated during warmups prior to the eighth race at Del Mar last Friday, his agent, Bill Sadoo, said over the weekend.

“He’ll be out of action for two to three weeks,” Sadoo said. “Until we get a couple of days away, we won’t have a clear idea. It’s so early in the process.”

The incident occurred a few minutes before the start of a maiden claimer on dirt. Frey’s mount, Beat the Chalk, flipped and was withdrawn.

Frey, the champion apprentice jockey of 2011, has won 20 races from 186 mounts this year. The 26-year-old Frey, who has won 656 races, won two Grade 3 stakes on Blended Citizen – the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park in March and the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park in May.

War Heroine gets a rest

War Heroine, the winner of the Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on July 21, has been taken out of training, owner Gary Barber said on Saturday.

“She didn’t come out of it well,” said Barber. “I’m going to give her time.”

Barber would not disclose the nature of War Heroine’s ailment. Trained by Peter Miller, War Heroine has won 4 of 6 starts and earned $240,945. She won the Sweet Life Stakes on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita in February.

Barber won Saturday’s $151,725 California Dreamin’ Stakes for statebreds with Fly to Mars, who set a course record of 1:39.50 for 1 1/16 miles on turf. The California Dreamin’ Stakes was the first stakes for Fly to Mars.

After the race, Barber said he is considering sending Got Stormy to California for the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks at 1 1/8 miles on turf for 3-year-old fillies on Aug. 18.

Trained by Mark Casse, Got Stormy has won 4 of 8 starts and earned $283,978. Got Stormy has won three consecutive stakes, the most recent of which was the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen Stakes at a mile on turf at Woodbine on July 21.
